Mabel Frances Terrell, 92, passed away peacefully at the Hospice Home on Saturday, Aug. 1, 2009.
A native of Mebane, Mabel had lived at the Presbyterian Home of Hawfields for the past eight years. She was the daughter of the late Oda Terrell and Emma W. Terrell. She was a lifelong member of the Mebane United Methodist Church.
Mabel is survived by cousins Carol Wilkinson Robertson, Keith T. Wilkinson and Kirk W. Wilkinson, and their mother, Amanda F. Wilkinson. Her favorite cousin, Clifton T. Wilkinson, died in January of this year.
The funeral will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2009, at McClure Funeral Home Chapel in Mebane at 1 p.m. Visitation will be at the chapel one hour prior to the service.

BUTNER, N.C. - Mr. Larry Edmond Smith, 56, of the Murdock Center, Butner, N.C., died at 5:45 a.m. on Monday, August 3, 2009 after one month of failing health.
Born in Alamance County, he was a member of the Orange Chapel United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Edna Marie Boley Smith of Graham; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father, Tommie Edmond Smith.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, August 5, 2009 at the Orange Chapel United Methodist Church by the Rev. Carl Belcher and the Rev. Bob Eldredge. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Donald Stuart Long, 65, of Burlington, N.C., died on Tuesday, August 11, 2009. He was a native of Alamance County and the husband of the late Edith Gray Tyndall Long. He was a devoted son, husband, father, grandfather, and a friend to many.
Don was raised in Mebane and spent the summers on his family's farm in Snow Hill. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He taught in the Burlington City School System for almost 30 years before retiring. While teaching, he also returned to UNC-CH and earned a Master's Degree.
Don's greatest hobby was weightlifting/powerlifting. He was a member of the Alamance County Barbell Club for many years, and he traveled all over the state with the Club to enter competitions. He has held several state records for lifting, and he was inducted into the North Carolina Power Lifting Hall of Fame and the Mebane Sports Hall of Fame.
Although Don relied on his own strength for most of his life, he did come to realize that he could not make it by his power alone; and he accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior in 2007. He was a member of Trinity Worship Center in Burlington.
Survivors include his daughter, Leigh Boyd and husband Brent of South Carolina; grandchildren, Catherine and Jackson Boyd; a brother, Richard Alexander Long of Greensboro; and numerous nieces, aunts, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Catherine Long; his wife, Edith Long; and a brother, Thomas Lee Long.
The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. on Sunday, August 16 at Trinity Worship Center by Pastor Darrell Cox. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery in Mebane.

She attended Southern Alamance High School, was a native of New Jersey and attended The Church at Burlington.

MEBANE - Mr. Gurney Atlas Thompson, 85, of 4620 Sams Road, died Saturday, Aug. 15, 2009, at VA Medical Center in Durham.
A native of Orange County, he was retired from Dixie Yarns in Mebane and a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II.
Mr. Thompson is survived by two daughters, Kathy (Wayne) Catlett, of Mebane, and Linda (Tim) Miller, of Burlington; a son, Ted Thompson, of Mebane; two sisters, Marie Perry, of California, and Della (Calvin) Hunter, of Richmond, Va.; grandchildren, Amy (Jason) Ernst and Bryant (Candy) Catlett, Tina Thompson and Melissa (Aurelia) Herrera; and nine great-grandchildren.

MEBANE - Clara Lucille Ray Edwards, 87, formerly of West Lee Street, Mebane, N.C., died Sunday, August 23, 2009 at 8:12 p.m. at Grandstrand Health Care, Myrtle Beach, S.C.
She was a loving mother, grandmother and sister.
In addition to being a homemaker, she worked at Rental Uniform in Graham and also in the men's department at K-Mart for a number of years. She enjoyed sewing and crocheting for friends and family. She was a member of Mebane United Methodist Church and a former member of Lebanon United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her daughters, Karen E. Tew and husband Larry "Emo" of Myrtle Beach, S.C. and Sylvia E. Lowe and husband Hubert of Oak Island, N.C.; grandchildren, Lisa L. Ingram of Angier, N.C., Melinda L. Smith of Burlington, April Moffitt of Loris, S.C. and Gina Walker of Burlington; great-grandchildren, Nathan and Adam Ingram; Kayla and Nicholas Smith and Tristan Moffitt.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Grover Cleveland Edwards; parents, Oliver Joseph Ray and Annie Williams Ray; sister, Annie E. Ray Westbrook; and brothers, Wilbur A. Ray and William O. Ray.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Thursday, August 27, 2009 at the McClure Funeral Home Chapel in Mebane by Dr. Brian Faggart. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery
Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service on Thursday, at McClure Funeral Home in Mebane.

GRAHAM - Ronald Todd Miller, 48, of 783 Martin Avenue, Graham, died Monday, August 24, 2009 at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.
Mr. Miller was a native of Alamance County.
Survivors include his daughter, Corrie Shepherd and husband Brett of Haw River; grandson, Chase Shepherd of Haw River; parents, Charles Ronald and Anita Seawell Miller of the home; brother Kendall "Kenny" Miller of the home; sister, Sheila Robertson and husband Greg of Burlington; nephews, Christian Miller, Dylan and Clay Robertson.

SWEPSONVILLE - Mr. Oscar Lee Pressley, 48, of Carolina Street, Swepsonville, N.C. died at 7:14 p.m. Wednesday, August 26, 2009 at the Kindred Hospital of Greensboro after two years of failing health, the last two-and-a-half months critical. A native of Alamance County, he was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include his son, Allen Lee Hughes, and his mother, Hazel Monroe Pressley, of Swepsonville. GRAHAM - Mr. Charles Howard Garner, devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather, 70, of 174 Chuck Garner Trail, died at Duke University Medical Center at 1:20 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 30, 2009, after one year and eight months of failing health, one week of critical illness, and after surviving two bouts with cancer. Born in Moore County, he was the owner of Garner Plumbing for many years, which is now the Garner/Murphy Construction Company. He was of the Baptist faith and a U.S. Navy veteran. Charlie was a great family man, loved bluegrass music, and large family and friend barbecues, which would go for many hours of music and fun. When the Garner children were younger, the family traveled around the state singing southern gospel music and were known as the "The Garner Family." Survivors include his wife, Rebecca Small "Becky" Garner, of the home; daughters, Robin Murphy and husband, Tim, Lori Boone and husband, Neil, Sandy Sanders and husband, Tim, all of Graham, and Lisa Leathers, of Hillsborough; son, Chuck Garner, of Graham; grandchildren, Angie Zachary, Brandon Zachary, Christy Murphy Lutterloh and husband, Clay, Alan Murphy and wife, Christian, Matthew Murphy, Dusty Coble, Dylan Coble, Abigayle Sanders, Tyler Sanders, Chuck "Chuckie" Garner, Charlsea Garner, Drew Boone, Hannah Boone and Jacob Boone; and seven great-grandchildren and one on the way. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dennis Howard Garner and Dora Sanders Kennedy. ROXBORO, N.C. - Bruce Clifton Williams, 61, of 325 Deer Creek lane, Roxboro, died Monday, August 31, 2009 at his residence. Bruce was born in Alamance County. He served his country during the Viet Name era with the U.S. Navy and he ran a printing press for a printing company.
