Elmo "Ham" Doby, 77, of 1108 Buckhorn Road, died Sunday, July 5, 2009, at Duke University Medical Center.

He is survived by his wife, Doris Doby, of the home; daughter, Jackie D. Cassidy, of Smithfield, Va.; son, Nicky Elmo Doby Sr., of Surry, Va.; grandchildren, Candace Oldham, of Burlington, and Melissa Mayberry, of Greensboro; great-grandchildren, Jessica Oldham, of Mebane, Neil Mayberry, of Greensboro, and Alexis Mayberry, of Greensboro; sisters, Cassie Holder, of Sanford, and Lexie Jacobs, of Mebane; brothers, Marvin Doby, Everette Doby, Gurney Doby and William P. Doby, all of Mebane; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William Paul Doby and Nealie Stanley Doby.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, at McClure Funeral Home Chapel in Mebane with the Rev. J.R. Hill and the Rev. James Christopher officitating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service time and other times at the residence.

MEBANE - John B. Huff, 86, beloved husband of Nancy K. Huff, to whom he was married for 62 years, went to be with the Lord Sunday, July 5, 2009 at 11:46 a.m.

Also surviving are his daughter, Barbara Huff McSparin and husband Rich; son, Peter H. Huff and wife Sandee; sister, Mary Craig Evans; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

John was a member of the Agape Baptist Church of Mebane, a World War II U.S. Army veteran and a graduate of the Philadelphia Museum School of Art.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m., Wednesday, July 8, 2009, at the Agape Baptist Church of Mebane. Officiating will be Pastor Peter Knapp and Donnie Alley.

Flowers are acceptable, but the family requests that in lieu of flowers memorials be made in memory of John to the Agape Baptist Church, 1451 Mebane Oaks Road, Mebane, N.C. 27302.

The body will remain at the McClure Funeral Home in Mebane until taken to the church for the service.

BURLINGTON - William "Bill" Mack Foust, 76, of 201 Bland Boulevard, Burlington, died July 8, 2009.

After serving two years with the U.S. Army during the Korean War, Mr. Foust went on to work for 21 years for Associated Transport, eight years with Branch Motor Express, 12 years with Wicker Services and two years with TST Trucking.

Survivors include four daughters, Sandy Jarrett and husband Ronnie of Gibsonville, Gwen Parker of Carolina Beach, Karen Basinger and husband Ward of Wilmington and Susan Croom of Wilmington; one son, Rodney Foust and wife Sharon of Liberty; a brother, Claude Howard Foust of Snow Camp; grandchildren, Wesley, Shelley, Nickole, Magen, Jordan, Hunter, Travis, Levi and Courtney; great-grandchildren, Trace, Allie, Johna and Natalie; and a very special aunt, Claudia "Dink" Seawell.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilson Foust and Bonnie McPherson Foust and a brother, Hal Dean.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 12 at McClure Chapel in Graham by the Rev. Ricky Cox. Burial will be in Bethel United Methodist Church cemetery.

GRAHAM - Mrs. Carrie Lee Reaves Maynard, 80, of 603 Oakley St., died Friday July 10, 2009, at 1:15 a.m. at Rehabilitation and Healthcare of Alamance.

Mrs. Maynard was born on June 14, 1929, in Dillon, S.C. She was a member of the Kingdom Hall Jehovah Witness of Mebane. Her life was full of smiles and love and she was a very strong and independent woman. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend and was considered to be the Matriarch of the family.

She is survived by her daughters, the Rev. Grace M. Baldwin, of Graham, Caroline Holloway, of Garner, Wanda Snipes and husband Louis, of Burlington, Frances Maynard, of Queens, N.Y., and Sylvia Griffin, of Raleigh; sons, the Revs. James Maynard and wife Belinda, of McLeansville, Frank A. Maynard, of Salisbury, and Gerry Maynard, of Burlington; 29 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and sister, Evelyn Reaves, of Baltimore, Md.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Maynard Jr.; parents, Richard Reaves Sr. and Corrie Belle Townsend Reaves; daughter, Joyce Maynard Swain; son, William Maynard; sister, Janice Baldwin; and brother, Richard Reaves Jr.

The funeral will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 14, 2009, at the McClure Funeral Home Chapel in Graham.

BURLINGTON - Mr. Robert Albert Moore, 66, of 1907 Wellington Road, died Wednesday, July 8, 2009, at Alamance Regional Medical Center.

A native of Franklinton, N.C., he was the owner/operator of Robert's Replacement Windows and Home Improvements and a member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church. He was a sweet and loving husband and grandfather who loved spending time at Salter Path and was an avid Duke fan.

Survivors include his wife, Dianne C. Moore, of the home; son, Glen Alexander and wife Connie of Hillsborough, N.C.; daughters, Dawn Ingle and husband Allan of Burlington, Jennifer Joines and husband Chris of Liberty and Suzanne Evans of Durham; brother, Carl Moore and wife Mary of Durham; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, Richard Lee Moore; mother, Lillie Lois Holmes Thomas; son, Robert Albert "Bobby" Moore Jr.; brother, Herbert Moore.

MEBANE - Ruby Holt Williams, 57, of 107 Crawford Street, Mebane, N.C., died at 7:15 p.m. Saturday, July 11, 2009, at the Duke University Medical Center.

Born in Alamance County, she was formerly employed with Wal-Mart and of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include her sons, Marty Williams of Hillsborough and Michael Williams and wife Kari of Mebane; two grandchildren, Jesse Williams and Lauren Williams; loving companion, Johnny Alvis of Efland; and special pet, Tapanga.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Frances Foust Holt; and her brother, Robert Holt.

GRAHAM, N.C. - David Eugene Dixon, 48, of 2305 Walter Andrews Road, Graham, died Wednesday, July 15, 2009, at his residence.

A native of Pasadena, Calif., he was a self-employed paint contractor.

Survivors include his wife, Loretta Andrews Dixon, of the home; son, Jonathan Dixon, of the home; stepchildren, Amber Hicks and Andrew Hicks, of the home; grandchildren, Makayla Little and Jonathan Christopher Ivey; mother, Betty Allen Dixon of Mebane; stepfather, Harold P. He was well loved by many friends and extended family.

BURLINGTON - Mr. Chester Lee Davis, 82, of Watson Drive, died Friday, July 17, 2009, at his residence.

Mr. Davis was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in World War II, and retired from Western Electric with 40 years of service.

Survivors include his daughter, Sue Davis Hester and husband Robert of Saxapahaw; sons, Ronald L. Davis and wife Theresa of Graham, Michael "Mike" E. Davis and wife Debbie of Pleasant Garden and Stephen G. Davis of Gibsonville; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

BURLINGTON - Mrs. Betty Frances Adams Jones, 76, of 2409 Bellemont-Alamance Road, died Friday July 17, 2009 at the Hospice Home of Burlington.

A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of Frank J. Jones and the daughter of the late Herbert M. Adams and Lela Cox Adams both deceased. She was a member of the Alamance Lutheran Church.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Donna L. Mayo and husband Ronald A. Mayo; sons, Barry L. Jones and wife Michal C. Jones, Rusty Jones and wife Karla Jones; sister, Doris Tucker; brothers, Connie Mack Adams and wife Ernestine, and Lawrence Adams and wife June; grandchildren, Chris and Lela Mayo, Caleb, Micah, Nathanael, Lydia, Ethan, Lindsey Jones and Charley Wilson; and numerous loving nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Judy Murray; brothers, Charles, Thomas, Kenneth, and William Adams.

SNOW CAMP - Paul "Ray" Thompson, 80, of Snow Camp died Monday, July 20, 2009, at Alamance Regional Medical Center.

A native of Snow Camp, he was owner and operator of Thompson's Garage in Snow Camp and a volunteer with the Snow Camp Volunteer Fire Department for 39 years. He was a member of Cane Creek Friends Meeting.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Louise Hinshaw Thompson; daughters, Linda Stone and Connie Dean; grandchildren, Heather Dean Atkins and husband Paul and Anthony Dean and wife Stephanie; great-grandchildren, Kayla Skinner, Gracelyn Dean, Macy Jo Atkins, Taylor Atkins and MeKala Atkins; sister, Daile Lewis and husband John; niece, Elaine York and husband Randy; nephew, Ben Payne and wife Doris.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd Paul and Verla Johnson Thompson.

A native of Wake County, she was retired from Old Dominion Box Company, and was a member of Glen Hope Baptist Church.

GRAHAM - Francis "Polly" Reagan, 62, of 7-B Cates Circle, Graham, N.C. 27253, went home to be with the Lord on July 24, 2009 at 10:27 a.m.

Polly was a member of Graham Friends Church for many years.

Mr. John Royster "Dock" Stout, 78, of 815 Lambe Road, passed away at his residence at 4:39 a.m. Saturday, July 25, 2009, after one month of critical illness.

Born in Alamance County, he was a lifelong farmer and was a retired postal worker, retired construction worker and was retired from the Burlington/Alamance School System.
He was a member of the Bethel United Methodist Church, Snow Camp, the Bethel Memorial Association, the Alamance County Bee Keepers Association, the NARFE, the Thomas M. Holt Masonic Lodge for 57 plus years, and a charter member of the Snow Camp Volunteer Fire Department.

Survivors include daughters, Marilynn Fogleman and husband, Keith, and Janet Williams, all of Graham; son, Charles Stout and wife, Cheryl, of Graham; sisters, Ann Moose and Gladys Thompson and husband, Elmer; brother, Jesse Everette "Cap" Stout Jr. and wife, Claudette; five grandchildren, D.J. Love and husband, Brian; Chris Fogleman and wife, April, Ashleigh Williams, Chase Stout, Bryce Stout; and great-grandchildren, Zoe Suit, Daylon Love, and Blake Fogleman.

GRAHAM - Sonia Love Brown, 55, died Sunday, July 26, 2009, after 13 years of failing health and three months of critical illness.

Born in Alamance County, she was a member of the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and former owner/operator of Ace Cycle Sales.

She is survived by her husband, Steven W. Brown; daughters, Stefanie Brown Barfield and husband Shawn, of Graham; two grandchildren; forever friend, Cathy Wilson; sister-in-law, Jean Allred; brother-in-law, Bill Brown; and mother-in-law Ruth Brown.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ben and Elda Moretti Love

BURLINGTON, N.C. - Fred M. Johnson, 80, of the Alamance Health Care Center, Burlington, passed away July 26, 2009 after two years of declining health and a critical illness of two months.

Married on December 24, 1949, he was the husband of Dolly Lee Phillips Johnson for 59 1/2 years. He was an employee of Alamance Motors for Cy Euliss and then an employee of Dick Shirley Chevrolet Inc. in Burlington, N.C., where he did wrecker service for 47 years.

Dolly and Fred lived at 404 Doggett Drive, Graham, N.C. before moving to Pleasant Grove Retirement Home 2 1/2 years ago. He was also a member of the Elk's Lodge1633. Family, friends and neighbors remember his delicious barbecues.

Survivors include his wife, Dolly; one sister, Mildred Johnson Greenway and husband Gene of Wilmington, N.C.; two brothers, Jack Johnson of Eli Whitney Community and Joe Johnson of Burlington.

Fred was preceded in death by brothers, Herman G. Johnson of Columbia, S.C. and Frank W. Johnson Jr. of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; his mother and father, Cleta McBane Johnson and Talton T. Johnson of Eli Whitney Community.

Born in Henderson, Kentucky he retired from Gulf Oil after 26 years. Most recently he worked for Food Lion and was a member of Glen Hope Baptist Church.

He was predeceased by his parents Joseph Oscar Rettig and Cornelia Wriver Rettig; daughter, Sharron Logan; brother, Charles Rettig; sister, Viola Gilner; and granddaughter, Shawna Lynn Rettig.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Opal Cooper Rettig; daughter, Jackie Rettig of the home; sons, retired Lt. Col. Howard Wayne Rettig and wife Sue of Harker Heights, Texas and David W. Rettig and wife Phyllis of Blacksburg, Virginia; five grandchildren, Tifanni Logan Gotsch, Shelli Rettig Brown, Shannin Rettig, Dustin Wesley Rettig, and Eva Rettig; and two great-grandchildren, Killian and Madeline Brown.

MEBANE, N.C. - Dorothy Waller "Dot" Webster, 80, of 701 N. Fifth Street died July 27, 2009 at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, Va.

A native of Caswell County, she was retired from Royal Park Uniforms and was a member of Mebane Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include her sons, Gerry Wayne (Wanda) Webster of Mebane, N.C. and Warren James (Ruth) Webster of Charlottesville, Va.; grandchildren, Chrystal (Gary) Smithey, Nicole "April" Webster, Brian (Amy) Webster, Brant Webster and Cole Webster; great-grandchildren, Chandler Stone Webster, Gavin Harvey Smithey and Dillon Zane Webster.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph "Joe" Webster; parents, Warren Waller and Mattie Snead Waller; two brothers and one sister.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 1, 2009 at Oakwood Cemetery by the Rev. Jeffrey Smith.

The family will receive friends at McClure Funeral Home in Mebane from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday evening and at other times at the residence.

BURLINGTON - Mr. George Clinton Overman, 79, of 722 South Sellars Mill Road, Burlington, died Wednesday, July 29, 2009 at Alamance Regional Medical Center.

A native of Alamance County, Mr. Overman was the owner and operator of J & G BBQ for 26 years, an avid bowler, past member of the Burlington Civitan Club and a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. He attended Riverdale Baptist Church and was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and was devoted to family and his very loving wife.

Survivors include his wife, Elsie S. Overman of the home; daughter, Mary Kay Andrews of Southport, N.C.; sons, Donnie Day and wife Letha of Elon, N.C., Clinton Overman of Burlington and Greg Overman of Haw River; grandchildren, Dan and Janie Barnwell of Graham, Maria Walker of Graham, Josh Williams of Florida, Kenneth and Michelle Day of Yanceyville, Traci and Todd Staley of South Carolina, Michelle Modlin of Graham, Brooke Overman of Haw River, Blake Overman of Haw River, Brandon Kivette of Okinawa, Japan and Kristy Hall of Graham.

He is also survived by great-grandchildren, Conner Day, Cameron Day, Chase Staley, Trevor Watkins, Jaicee Watkins, Skyler Argento, Kalie Argento, Tanner Barnwell; sisters, Shirley and Jim Hall of Graham, Betty and Clyde "June" Warren of Burlington, Margaret Riley of Haw River; brothers, Billy Overman of Graham, Harry and Mary Overman of Burlington, Ralph and Elaine Overman of Burlington, Jimmy and Blanche Overman of Burlington, Donnie and Linda Overman of Greensboro; and many loving nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Myrtle Allen Overman; sisters, Frances Perry and Carrie Guinn; brothers, Vernell Overman, John Overman, Ervin Overman, and Bobby Overman.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at McClure Funeral Home Chapel in Graham by the Rev. Jim Hall and the Rev. Jonathan Graves. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.

GRAHAM - Willis Dewaine "Bill" McGowan, 82, of 310 Clapp St., died Friday, July 31, 2009, at Alamance Regional Medical Center.

Bill was born in Dundalk, Md. He was a retired Master SGT in the U.S. Army with 29 years of service to his country. Bill also retired from the city of Graham, Water Department. He was a member of Glen Hope Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and a Sunday school teacher. He also served on the search committee and was very active with the senior adults.

Survivors include his wife, Rachel Harris McGowan, of the home; sons, Michael Edward McGowan and wife, Stephanie, of Graham, the Rev. Steven Dewaine McGowan and wife, Sherry, of Yanceyville; four grandchildren, Dustin McGowan and Katherine McGowan, both of Graham, Jamie Mariano, of Mebane, and Candice Shelton, of Haw River; four great-grandchildren; a sister in law, Kate McGowan; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James Thomas McGowan and Emma Lou McGowan Dixon; granddaughter, Charice Smith; and brothers, James McGowan, Donald McGowan and Norman McGowan.

The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2009, at Glen Hope Baptist Church with the Rev. Larry Redding, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery with military honors .
