MEBANE — Dalton Benjamin Rhue died Tuesday, October 16, one day short of his 80th birthday. He was as kind, generous, and devoted a man as the world has ever known.
The family wishes to thank the innumerable friends and loved ones who have helped sustain us during this difficult period. We are also very grateful to the dear staff of Liberty Commons Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. The staff of the Hospice and Palliative Care Center of Ala-mance-Caswell have also been of great comfort.
Dad wanted his final words to be a testimony and wrote the following remembrances:
Praise the Lord! I’m now home with Jesus, saved relatives, and friends. Hallelujah.
GLORY TO GOD.
I was born in the small farming town of Newport, N.C. on October 17, 1927, the oldest child of my dear parents, Vernal Martin Rhue and Bertha Mae Garner Rhue (both deceased). I have two deceased brothers, Vincent Martin Rhue (died at age 25) and a younger brother, 2 years younger than I, Myron Edwin Rhue (killed in Vietnam at the age of 21). I leave two living sisters and brothers-in-law, Shirley Rhue Miller and husband, Archie R. Miller and Geneva Rhue Jenkins and husband, Paul D. Jenkins. We were all raised in a fine, Christian, happy family.
In September 1944, I entered the School of Engineering at N.C. State College. College was in-terrupted when at 18 I was drafted into the U.S. Army at the end of World War II. Part of my army career was spent in the Philippines. After release, I returned to N.C. State College and graduated in March, 1950.
After several engineering jobs, I was employed on August 13, 1951, as a product engineer at the Western Electric Plant, Burlington, N.C. While at this location, in the summer of 1957 (when I was approaching 30 years of age), I met the most beautiful, talented, compassionate and godly woman I had ever known, Katherine Dismuke. She was only 21 years old, a rising senior at East Carolina University. After 6 weeks of dating, we became engaged, and after her fall quarter on December 14, 1957, we were married in the Grove Park Baptist Church by the Reverend Travis Styles. We moved into a new house in Greenway Park, Graham, N.C. On December 14, 2007, we will have been married 50 years. Our marriage has been based on putting Jesus as head of our home and has been as happy and perfect as any marriage could be. Our marriage has been blessed by the Lord, who gave us four of the most wonderful, loving, caring children: Sharon Kathleen Rhue, our first; Barry Martin Rhue, our second; Douglas Moore Rhue, our third; and Darin Benjamin Rhue, our fourth. Since then, he has added 3 in-laws who are loved and really are our children, too: Steven Jones (Sharon), Mincey Dodson Rhue (Barry) and Donna Tate Rhue (Darin). Our youngest has provided us with our one and only grandchild, our beloved and talented granddaughter, Kailyn Elizabeth Rhue. Thanks to her parents for providing her a good Christian environment to grow up in as well as a good conservative school, where she will re-ceive a good education.
After 42 years with Western Electric/AT&T, I retired on August 31, 1993. The first 16 years were spent as an engineer, the last 26 as a department chief/engineering manager. The most exciting years 1968-1973 were spent in Orlando, Florida with offices at Martin Marietta working on the Sprint Missile project (part of the Safeguard anti-missile program). I enjoyed all 42 years with Western Electric/AT&T.
The entire services have been arranged to be a celebration of what Jesus has meant to me and not as a traditional sorrowful funeral service. First I prefer there be no flowers and no viewing of my temporary house into which I lived to date. A brief service will be held at the Mebane Oakwood Cemetery to be followed by a memorial service at Bethel Baptist Church, Graham, N.C. conducted by Pastor Rick Chandler, and the Rev. Charles Fleshman. A reception will follow where the family will receive friends.
Memorial Gifts can be made to: The Gideons International Memorial Bible Plan, P.O. Box 422, Graham, N.C. 27253; or to Bethel Baptist Church Building Fund, 238 Dixon Road, Graham, N.C. 27253.
Now for final words to my friends and neighbors. If you have received Jesus Christ in your heart and have a personal relationship with Him, I’ll see you in Heaven someday. If NOT, please don’t wait. Do not believe the politically-correct thinking of today: “I’ve been a church member for years”, “There is more than one way to Heaven”; If you are truly sincere in what you believe….”; God weighs your good against your bad deeds, and if the good outweighs the bad you will go to Heaven”. There are many more, which are by works. The Bible plainly teaches “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man (woman) should boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9.
If you believe in the Bible as the infallible word of God, as I do, you know that there is only one way to Heaven. As Jesus said in John 14:6, “I am the way, the truth, and the life; no man (woman) cometh to the Father, but by me.” In Romans 10:13, the Holy Spirit inspired Paul to write, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord (Jesus) shall be saved.” There are many other references to the truth that there is only one way to Heaven; through a person rela-tionship with Jesus Christ.
As Paul writes in II Corinthians 5:8 “We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.” This applies to all born from above Christian. If you have not received Jesus Christ in this way, it will be absent from the body, present in eternal torment. Please don’t let his happen to you.
Services will be as follows: a graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, October 19, at Oakwood Cemetery. A memorial service will follow the graveside service at Bethel Baptist Church, Dixon Road, Graham. Following the services the family will receive friends in the Fellowship Hall.

BURLINGTON — Mary C. Turner, It is with a heavy heart that we share that Mary C. Ford Turner, age 86, of 213 Rolling Road passed on October 28, 2007. With her indomitable spirit and will, Mary lived through many tough medical conditions. She outlived an acute terminal diagnosis and left this earth on her own terms 10 years later than expected.
Mary and Pete Turner were married almost 62 years. She married him because he was the cutest, kindest and most mischievous man she had ever met. He loved her feisty spirit, porcelain skin, beautiful jet-black hair and her amazing legs. They stayed together for better or worse, for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health until Pete passed four years ago. She missed him every minute of every day and was looking forward to joining her husband and dancing with him as soon as she joined him in heaven.
Mary worked at Tower Hosiery, Bur-Mill, and the Times-News. She volunteered by supporting the troops in WWII. Her greatest achievement was helping raise her brothers and sisters, her children, and her grandchildren. Mary was happiest with a house full of family. She was at peace holding a baby, being in church, tending to all of her flowers, sewing an outfit, singing and just rocking in her favorite chair.
She will be remembered as a devoted wife, loving mother, caring sister, beloved grandmother (nana) and a doting great-grandmother. She was proceeded in death by her husband, Pete Turner; her mother Josie Ford; her father Craig Ford; brothers Horace and Lewis Ford; and sister Ruby Hicks. She will be greatly missed by her children Vicky Church, Rick Turner, and Billy Turner & Donna Turner; her sisters Sara Norred, Brenda Ford; her brothers Linwood and Kenneth Ford; grandchildren, Tammy and Randy Robbins, Bart and Cathy Church Norman, Craig and Suzanne Turner, Nicole and Dave Stewart, Courtney and Derek Brooks; her great-grandchildren Jakob Turner Robbins, Elijah Turner Norman, Emilie Boone Robbins, Samuel Preston Norman, Dylan Turner Brooks, Addison Pete Turner, and Noah Graeme Stewart. The family would like to thank Frances Turner, Myra Haymore, Linda Smith and Sandra Ford for caring for and loving Mary.
The visitation will be at the McClure Funeral Service in Graham from 5 until 8 Monday evening. The Funeral will be held Tuesday, October 30th at the McClure Funeral Chapel in Graham at 11a.m., with the Reverend Warren Bock and the Reverend Cathy Church Norman officiating. In lieu of flowers the family would ask that you consider making a donation to Hospice and Palliative Care of Alamance-Caswell, 914 Chapel Hill Road, Burlington, NC, for their assistance and graciousness during this difficult time.
