Betty Jean Riggs Clayton
She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was highly respected and loved by everyone. Mrs. Clayton was a member of Eastside Baptist church and loved her church family. She was a person who liked people. She worked in grocery stores all of her life - 30 years with Byrd's, 12 years for Food Lion and several years for her dad, who owned a grocery store. She enjoyed good gospel singing, traveling and going to the beach with "The Sisters", family gatherings and birthdays, and watching her grandchildren play sports.
Survivors include her husband, Edward B. Clayton, of the home; daughters, Sandra Riggs Jones and husband Ray of Liberty, N.C. and Debra Riggs Jordan of Graham; sisters, Marie Morris and husband Ricky, Barbara Booth and husband Walter and Linda Albright and husband Malone, all of Mebane; brother, Ronald E. Sykes and wife Susan of Graham; grandson, Rodney Hicks and wife Candice of Greensboro; granddaughters, Jessica Pope and husband Sgt. Joseph Pope of Ft. Campbell, Ky., and Kimberly Jordan of Charlotte, N.C.; great-grandchildren, Mason Pope and Coral Hicks; stepdaughter, Sharon Greenlee of Chapel Hill; stepsons, Brad Clayton and wife Michelle of Graham, N.C. and Doug Clayton and wife Susie of Ohio; five step-grandchildren, Brittaney Clayton, Cassie Clayton, Matthew Greenlee, Sarah Greenlee and Zack Greenlee.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, following 32 years of marriage, Willard Thomas Riggs; parents, John Thomas Sykes and Edna Shambley Sykes; and brother, John Robert Sykes.
The family will receive friends from 3 until 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 2, 2012 at McClure Funeral Home in Mebane, N.C.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 3, 2012 at Eastside Baptist Church in Mebane by the Rev. Chuck Perkins. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery,
