Martha Kornegay Obituary

Martha Bryant Kornegay, 77, passed away November 9th 2018 after losing her battle with Dementia. She was born on February 4, 1941 in Bladen County to James Andrew Bryant & Minnie Rosallie Jackson. She had 6 brothers & 3 sisters. She graduated from White Oak High School in 1959. On August 22, 1960 she married Louis Kornegay & had 2 sons, Dana Keith Kornegay & Rodney Gene Kornegay.
She would lose Dana at just 5 months old to pneumonia. She never got over that. Just the mention of his name & she would cry. 12 yrs later I came along. A 2nd chance. Needless to say, I was a little spoiled. She was the best mom growing up though.  She was involved in every aspect of my schooling. From always volunteering to later on becoming a regular as a substitute teacher as well as a bus driver in the Orange County School System.
She was a Chairperson for Safety Haven of Hillsborough & Orange County from 85' to 91' and a Board Member for Orange County Community Watch 86' to 88'.
In 1991 at the young age of 50, she decided to go back to school. She Graduated from Durham Technical Community College in 1993 with an Associate Degree in Applied Science where she majored in Paralegal Technology. She would graduate again in 1995 with an Associate Degree in Applied Science with the major being Criminal Justice. Then she went to North Carolina Central University where she graduated in 1999 with a Batchelor of Science Degree where she majored in Criminal Justice. And she did all of that while working at Harbor Bay Seafood as a waitress at night. She had determination like no other. She even made the President's list twice & the Deans list once at Durham Tech. Even in her 50's her grades were better than mine. We couldn't have been more proud of her.
She is preceeded in death by her husband Louis Kornegay, son Dana Keith Kornegay, stepson Steven Author Kornegay, father James Andrew Bryant, mother Minnie Rosallie Jackson, stepmother Alta Coble, brothers David, Thomas, Harold, Preston & Andy Bryant & sister Maxine Woodburn just a month ago on the 9th as well.
She is survived by me, her son Rodney(Julie) Kornegay, stepsons Louis(Diane) Kornegay Jr. & Gregory(Vivian) Kornegay, stepdaughter Mary Lou Batchelor(Murphy Dean), granddaughters Kelsey, Chrissy & Andrea Kornegay, grandsons Andy, Bobby, Adam, Ashley, Matthew & Justin Kornegay, brother Levern(Lisa) Bryant, and sisters Alice(Jimmy) Jones & Mary(Carroll) Barnard and many nieces & nephews.
Visitation will be Tuesday November 13, from 6-8pm at McClure Funeral and Cremation Service in Graham and the service will be Wednesday November 14 at 2pm in the McClure Funeral Chapel in Graham.
