She is also survived by daughter-in-law Faye Lewis of Graham, NC; granddaughter Christina Wilkins and husband Steve of Graham, NC, and great-grandchildren Payton and Camden Wilkins; daughter Stokes Ann Hunt and husband Scott Greene of Reidsville, NC; granddaughter Emma Crabtree and husband Ricky of Reidsville, NC, and great-grandchildren Ruby Mae and Huntley Belle Crabtree; son-in-law Nathan Washburn of Reidsville, NC; granddaughter Jennifer Cook and husband Bradley of Reidsville, NC, and great-grandson Kenan Cook.
Annie has three surviving siblings: sister Mary Lois Jessup of Greensboro, NC, and sister Jennie Smith and brother Sam Gillispie of Reidsville, NC. She is surrounded in love from her surviving nieces and nephews and many friends.
Annie was preceded in death by her first husband of 43 years, Jack J. Lewis; her second husband of 15 years, Stokes M. Hunt; son Jack McKinney (Mac) Lewis; daughter Louise Revelle Washburn; parents Howard (Pete) and Gladys McKinney; brother, Eugene McKinney and in-laws Parker and Rosa Lewis.
Annie made the decision several years ago, to donate her body to medical research. She chose the Anatomical Gift Program at Elon University School of Medicine. She felt if someone could learn from her body, she wanted them to have that opportunity.
Annie loved family, singing, cooking (a pot of beans and cornbread), baking (pound cakes and whatever other recipe that caught her eye), dancing, flowers, and travel. She had the companionship of her “puppy, Precious” for 13 years. She was fiercely independent until the end, even when making the decision to give up her driving privileges. She was a caregiver and will be remembered for the care she gave others during their lifetime with her. You knew you were loved.
Deborah would love to have a dollar for every quart of green beans that were canned by her or to have another chance to make a pot of Brunswick stew outside over a fire in the big black pot. Special memories were made when the three sisters decided to travel together or when they were joined by brother Sam for lunch at a favorite steak house.
Annie was a lifetime member of the Concord United Methodist Church choir, and at one time her entire family – Jack, Mac, and Deb – sang alongside her. One of Deborah’s earliest memories was listening to her mother, Aunt Edna, Uncle Wilbert, and Mr. Wagoner (pastor at that time at Concord) singing as a quartet on Sunday mornings.
A Celebration of Life will be held to honor Annie on Saturday, November 16, at 2:30 pm in the Concord church fellowship hall, 4462 E. Greensboro Chapel Hill Rd, Graham, NC. The family requests no flowers. Memorials can be made to Concord United Methodist Church in her memory.
