May 4, 1942 — January 20, 2025

Prospect Hill

Annie "Jeanette" Oakley Tatum, known as Jeanette to her friends and family, passed away peacefully on January 20, 2025, at the age of 82.  She was born on May 4, 1942, to the late Alonza and Lucille Oakley. Jeanette's life was marked by her vibrant spirit, her love for her family, and her passion for the beauty of nature.

She graduated from Prospect Hill School, where her enthusiasm shone through as a member of the cheerleading squad.

After graduation, Jeanette channeled her creativity and love for flowers into a successful career as a florist. Her artistic touch and keen eye for design brought joy to countless individuals through her stunning floral arrangements.

She was the cherished wife of Walter Tatum, with whom she shared an enduring love story spanning 62 years. Together, they created a legacy of love and commitment that served as an inspiration to all who knew them.

Family was the cornerstone of Jeanette's world. She was a loving sister to Lounell Talley, Pat Clayton, Hassell Oakley, Tom Oakley, and Danny Oakley. Her brothers, Haywood "Red" Oakley and Kenneth Oakley, preceded her in death, but the memories they shared continue to live on in the hearts of those who loved them. Jeanette's nieces and nephews held a special place in her heart, and she was adored by them in return for her warmth, wisdom, and the joy she brought into their lives.

Jeanette's love for life extended beyond her family. She had a deep appreciation for the serenity of the beach and the companionship of animals, especially cats, which brought her immeasurable comfort and happiness. Her own yard was a testament to her love for the outdoors, a personal sanctuary where she spent countless hours nurturing the earth. A funeral service will be held at 2pm on Friday, January 24, 2025 at Lea Bethel Baptist Church in Prospect Hill.  The family will receive friends following the funeral at Walter and Jeanette’s home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to AuthoraCare Hospice of Alamance-Caswell 914 Chapel Hill Rd. Burlington, NC 27215
