Arizontia Elgin Compton

February 9, 1927 — December 30, 2014

Arizontia Frances Elgin Compton, 87, died peacefully on December 30, 2014, following many years of wonderfully healthy and active life, and several years of illness due to the ravages of dementia. She was born on February 9, 1927, to Richard Guy Elgin and Sallie Frances Doss Elgin. She was married to Charlie Henry Compton, who died in 2008, at age 83. Two sisters, Gladys Hinson, and Margaret Gusler, also preceded her in death. She is survived by a brother, Roy Elgin, of Burlington, NC; a son, Stephen C. Compton of Raleigh, NC; a daughter, Becky Goodman Jackson of Bluff City, TN; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Zonie, as she was known by her family, friends, and customers, worked in banking throughout most of her life, including employment by Security National Bank in Burlington; the Bank of Alamance in Graham; and Wachovia Bank and Trust Company in Burlington and Graham. She was once a member of Davis Street Methodist Church, a charter member of Trinity Methodist Church, and a long-time member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church (formerly Trinity and Webb Avenue Methodist churches), all of Burlington. Her success in life was not defined by educational achievements, wealth, or fame, but by the exceptional qualities of a noble life well lived, and unprejudiced love freely given. The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:30 p.m. on Friday, January 2, at McClure Funeral Service, located at 1030 South Main Street, Graham, NC 27253. A memorial service will follow in the chapel at 2:30 p.m., with interment at Graham Memorial Park. Dr. William M. Presnell, of Wilson, NC, will preside. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Allied Churches of Alamance County Food Service, 206 North Fisher Street, Burlington, NC 27217.
