With heavy hearts, we announce the peaceful passing of Barbara Willette Peregoy on February 21, 2026, at the age of 84. Born on August 12, 1941, in the serene town of Shipman, Virginia, Barbara graced the world with her warmth and kindness, leaving an indelible mark on all who were fortunate to know her.
Barbara was the cherished daughter of Edwin and Lotte Gunter, who have predeceased her, along with her siblings Dallas Gunter, Keith (Kit) Gunter, and Linda Gunter. She grew up surrounded by the rolling hills of Virginia, where she built the foundation of a life characterized by love, compassion, and unwavering dedication to family and community.
A proud graduate of Nelson County High School in Lovingston, VA, class of 1959, Barbara embarked on a remarkable career in financial management within the Federal government. From 1975, she served diligently at the Navy Fleet Material Support Office in Mechanicsburg, PA. Her roles included Budget Analyst, Resource Management Coordinator, Program Coordinator, Comptroller, and Financial Analyst until her retirement. Barbara's work was not just a career, but a testament to her meticulous nature and commitment to public service.
In her retirement, Barbara found joy in simpler pursuits, taking a part-time position at Boscov's Department Store in Camp Hill, PA. Her interactions with customers and colleagues were a continuation of her life-long mission to spread kindness and joy. Despite eventually having to retire due to health reasons, she left a lasting impression on everyone she met.
Barbara's faith was a cornerstone of her life. An active member of her Lutheran church for over 50 years, she later embraced a non-denominational church community. Her service as an usher, food pantry operator, and church treasurer reflected her deep commitment to her faith and her community.
Travel was one of Barbara's great passions. With her travel group, she explored the far corners of the world, from Europe and Australia to the Middle East, as well as across the United States, including the majestic landscapes of Alaska and Hawaii. Each journey was a new chapter in her book of life, filled with wonder and discovery.
Barbara was also a collector of beauty. Her Precious Moments and Lladro figurines, along with her lighthouse and angel collections, were reflections of her love for artistry and grace. Her talents extended to the canvas, where she created beautiful oil paintings, and to the puzzle table, where she delighted in solving jigsaw puzzles with family and friends.
Her greatest joy, however, was her family. Survived by her beloved children, Jeffrey (Jeff) Peregoy and Christopher (Chris) Peregoy, and her treasured grandchildren, Sydney Peregoy and Joseph (Joe) Peregoy, Barbara's legacy of love and generosity lives on. She is also survived by her dear siblings, Roderick (Rod) Gunter and Frances Lantz, who, along with her extended family, will forever cherish her memory.
Barbara's family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Signature Healthcare of Chapel Hill for their compassionate care during her final days. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to UNC Hospice, an organization close to Barbara's heart.
A life well-lived, Barbara Willette Peregoy will be remembered for her warmth, kindness, and the joy she brought into the lives of those who knew her. As we celebrate her life, we find comfort in knowing that her spirit lives on in our hearts and in the love she shared so freely.
Rest in peace, dear Barbara. You will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.
