Betty Jean Councilman Dickens

Heaven gained a faithful, gentle soul on May 23, 2024.  She was a Christ follower, Wife, Mother, Mother in Law, Grandma, Great Grandma, Aunt, Sister, Sister-in-law, Friend.  She was a wonderful role model and champion of her family.  Mrs. Betty Jean Councilman Dickens, 91, of Burlington passed away peacefully, at home surrounded by family. A native of Alamance County. NC, she was the daughter of the late Alvis Worth Councilman and Elsie Sutton Councilman and the wife of the late Harper “Buck” Dickens. Betty was a longtime of Carolina Christian Church where she served on the Woman’s Fellowship, the Church Choir and taught Sunday School for numerous years. Survivors include her loving children, sons, Rev. E. Reid Dickens and Neal Dickens and wife Joye; her grandchildren, Mitch Dickens and wife Caitlin, Makenzie Simmons and husband Matt, Clark Dickens and wife Erica, and Layna McAlister and husband Sam; her special great grandchildren, Gracee, Easton, Lily, Griffin, Titus, Quinn, and Brooklyn; her sister, Dottie Rickman; her “adopted son”, Rev. Mark Mitchell and wife Cynthia, and many loving nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, Betty was preceded in death by her son, Joel E. Dickens; her sisters, Lottie Jones, Ollie Mae Caviness, and Lucille Dickey; and a brother Norman Councilman. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday May 28, 2024, at the Carolina Christian Church with the Pastors, E. Reid Dickens, Mark Mitchell and Phillip Brande officiating. A burial will follow alongside her husband Buck, in Carolina Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 1:45 PM prior to the service on Tuesday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Carolina Christian Church at 2030 Carolina Rd. Burlington, NC 27217 or to the Masonic Home for Children (Oxford Orphanage) at 600 College St. Oxford, NC 27565. McClure Funeral Service in Graham is assisting the family.
