Beverly Sumner Arthur

Mrs. Beverly Sumner Arthurs, 81, of 313 West Pine Street, Graham, NC, passed away on Saturday June 18, 2016 at the Hospice and Palliative Care Center in Burlington after 4 years of failing health. A native of Guilford County, she was the daughter of the late James D. and Catherine Crotts Sumner. Mrs. Arthurs was the first female band director in North Carolina with the Garner High School Band. In 1975 she received the Superior in Contest award as a band director with the Garner Middle School. She proudly dedicated 37 years of her life to the Alamance Community Extended Education program teaching the piano. Over the many years she had taught hundreds of people the gift and art of the piano. Mrs. Arthurs was a member of the Burlington Assembly of God and taught piano at Burlington Christian Academy for 35 years. She enjoyed the beach and her joy was sailing around the Bank Channel in Wrightsville Beach, NC. Survivors include her sons, Arthur Sinclair “Sonny” Newman, of Wilmington, NC ad James Daniel “Danny” Newman, of Texas. A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 PM on Wednesday June 22, 2016 at the McClure Funeral Home Chapel in Graham with the Rev. Howard Thompson Officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the Funeral Home on Wednesday and other times at the residence of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Hospice and Palliative care Center of Alamance/Caswell at 918 Chapel Hill Rd. Burlington, NC 27215.
