Bobby "Papa" Gene Barts

Bobby “Papa” Gene Barts, age 86, of Mebane, North Carolina, passed away on November 2, 2026, at his residence in Mebane, NC. He was born in Caswell County, North Carolina, and lived a life marked by devotion to his family, his country, his church, and the many people whose lives he touched along the way. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Janet Freshwater Barts; his son, Greg Barts; his granddaughter, Rebekah Barts; his great-grandchildren, Jernigan and Xander; and other loving family members who will cherish his memory always. He was preceded in death by his parents, Theodore “Shorty” Barts and Fannie Fuquay Barts. Bobby was a proud veteran of the United States Army and carried the values of service, discipline, and loyalty throughout his life. He was also an avid and skilled pilot and flight instructor, a calling that reflected both his love of flying and his desire to share that passion with others. Those who knew him admired his steady hand, his knowledge, and the confidence he inspired in those fortunate enough to learn from him. He was a member of the Mebane VFW and valued the fellowship and camaraderie that came with his service and association with fellow veterans. Bobby also found strength and comfort in his faith as a member of Edgewood Baptist Church. His church family and community knew him as a kind and approachable man who never met a stranger. He had a warm spirit, a friendly word for everyone, and a genuine interest in the lives of others. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday November 8, 2026, at the McClure Funeral Home Chapel in Mebane with the Pastor Brad Harrison officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Sunday. A private family burial will be held at Oakwood Cemetery.
