It is with deep sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing of Charles “Chuck” Edward Utberg on Friday, August 16th. Chuck passed away in his sleep surrounded by the love and warmth of his family.
Born July 4th, 1941 in Alleghany County, Pennsylvania, Chuck graduated from Avalon High School, Class of 1959, and continued his education at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He has called North Carolina his home for almost 50 years.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Sandy Dameron Utberg, with whom he would have celebrated 38 years of marriage next month. His memory lives on through his daughters Caryn Utberg (Bill Comfort), Amy Utberg, Lori Solvason (Steve) and Julie Brookhart (Ben) as well as his sister and brother-in-law, Carolyn and Don Utberg-Hood. He was proceeded in death by sisters Susie Barnum (Bob) and Virginia McMullun (Moe).
Chuck was many things to a lot of people. He was known as “Charlie” to his siblings, “Chuck” to his friends and colleagues, “Dad” to his daughters, “Grandpap” and “Papa Chuck” to his grandchildren, Amber Remington (Kenny), Anna, Connor and Charlie and “Pap Pap” to his great grandchildren, Trey and Emery.
He spent his career in the chemical sales industry, which afforded him the opportunity to travel within the US and abroad. He was highly respected in the business community and retired from Burlington Chemical Company in 2003.
Chuck was an avid list maker, meticulous record keeper, voracious reader and secret poet. He had a remarkable ability to capture his thoughts and emotions in writing, a talent only known to a few. His generous spirit extended beyond his family. Some of his favorite organizations to support were Big Brothers Big Sisters and Christmas Cheer. Due to his true patriotism and love for his country, Chuck also supported various veterans’ groups.
Many were drawn to Chuck for his gentle and encouraging nature. Passionate, sentimental, fun-loving and engaged, Chuck collected friends easily and made lasting impressions. He freely shared his kindness and all that he was or had with all people of all ages without judgment, but with understanding, acceptance, forgiveness and support. Humble and sincere, Chuck was a man of his word and a loyal friend. Maintaining connections with friends and family was a priority.
Chuck enjoyed his retirement and considered his senior years quite an unexpected bonus. Chuck turned to a higher power for guidance and became comfortable with his relationship with God. He enjoyed the peacefulness of country living, relishing the simple pleasures of life - whether it was casting a fishing line, following Duke basketball, Pittsburgh Steelers and Carolina Panthers football, or porch sitting with his 4 o'clock jelly jar glass of wine. His love for his family was ever present and expressed in countless ways. He was never happier than when he was surrounded by his daughters and their families.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM Until 4:00 PM on Saturday August 31, 2024 at the McClure Funeral Home in Graham located at 1030 South Main Street, Graham, NC.
The family kindly requests live indoor or outdoor plants be given in lieu of flowers, as a living tribute to Chucks love for nature and life or you may donate to the charity of your choice in loving memory of Chuck.
