Mr. Charlie Phillip Burnette, 97, of Mebane, NC, passed away on Thursday, October 12, 2017. A native of Alamance County, NC, he was born on August 28, 1920 to the late John and Tessie Whitmore Burnette. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie “Sonnie” Hayes Burnette in 2009. He was a proud veteran of the Army during WWII serving in Japan, Philippines and New Guinea. He loved to tell everyone about his adventures in the Army. He was a retiree from Burlington Industries. he was a member of the Occaneechi in the Saponi Tribe. He is survived by his loving and devoted son and caregiver, Bernard Burnette, of the home; a loving daughter, Barbara Headen, of Graham; grandchildren, Clarice Burnette, of Maryland and his special Kristin Morrow and husband Derek, of Charlotte; four great grandchildren, including his “Boys” Zachary and Matthew Morrow. He is also survived by two brothers, Kermit and Harry Burnette and a sister, Annie Jeffries. He was preceded in death by a son, Gregory Burnette; brothers, Robert, Atwell, Edsel and Johnny and a sister, Delores Jeffries. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday October 15, 2017 at the Martin’s Chapel Baptist Church with burial to follow in the Church Cemetery with Military Honors. The family will greet friends one-half hour prior to the service at the church on Sunday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Hospice of Alamance/Caswell at 918 Chapel Hill Rd.
