MEBANE - Costen Harrell Berry, 90, of 437 W. Carr Street, passed away peacefully at his home Feb. 18, 2014. Costen (Cot to family and friends) was a World War II veteran, serving in the Army 1st Division under the command of General George Patton in the North Africa and Sicily campaigns. He was retired from American Tobacco Company. In retirement Cot enjoyed travel and was an avid golfer. Cot was preceded in death by his wife, Sarah Olive Berry; father, Charles E. Berry; mother, Luna Gray Berry; son, Costen Harrell Berry Jr.; brothers, Charles E. Berry and Marshal Petain Berry. He is survived by his daughter, Joan Berry Rummel and husband Mel of Alpharetta, Ga.; son, Ken Douglas Berry and wife Nancy of Mebane; brother, John Thomas Berry and wife Lois of Raleigh; sisters, Alyse Barnes and husband Lee R. (Shorty) of Durham, Silvia Clayton of Roxboro, Peggy Mustain and husband Al of Hurdle Mills and Alma Jean Green and husband Robert of Simpsonville, S.C. Costen is also survived by granddaughters, Lauren Gray Rummel of Scottsdale, Ariz., Kathryn Berry Mathias and husband David of Hillsborough and Sara Elizabeth Berry of Mebane; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends at McClure Funeral Service in Mebane on Friday, Feb. 21, 2014, from 6 to 8 p.m. A graveside service will be held in Oakwood Cemetery in Mebane on Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014, at 1 p.m. Memorials may be made to Duke Home Care and Hospice, 4321 Medical Park Drive, Ste. 101, Durham, NC 27704.
