Dallas Houston Cook

Dallas Houston Cook passed away on Saturday, July 15, 2023 at Peak Resources-Alamance after several months of failing health.

He was born in Watauga County, on July 6,1928 to George L. and Ruth Farthing Cook.  He married Emma Louise Norris in 1947 and moved to the Orange County area in 1956.   He worked on Perry’s Dairy Farm and Fertilizer Company until 1968, he then worked for FCX/Southern States-Mebane retiring in 1993.     He then worked at Scott Sand & Stone for several years.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Emma Louise Norris, his parents, his brother Burl, daughters Crystal Lynn Cook and Johnsie Cook Smith, son, James M. Cook, grandson, Richard Dwayne Cook, and Barry Kernodle.

Houston was a faithful member of Oak Grove Baptist Church for 67 years serving as deacon, SS superintendent, teacher and choir member. His favorite past-time was listening to and playing bluegrass gospel. He organized his own band, Cook County. They often visited and played at area nursing homes and churches. During the summer, he also enjoyed an order of french fries and a cup of ice cream, while watching softball games at Oak Grove ball field. He is survived by daughters:  Gail C. Gibbs, Donna C. Simmons (Robert), Frieda C. McLendon (Mike), Dianne R. Cook (Ricky) and sons:  John D. Cook, Robert G. Cook (Debbie) and Douglas A. Cook.  He is also survived by his sisters: Lavola Henson (Hugh) of Vilas, NC and Lola Cook of Mountain City, TN and 13 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends at McClure Funeral Home, 1308 South Third Street Ext., Mebane, NC on Tuesday, July 18, 6:00 – 8:00 pm and other times at his home, 5031 Chipmunk Lane, Mebane.   Services will be held Wednesday, July 19, 11:00 a.m. at Oak Grove Baptist Church, 5217 Oak Grove Church Road, Mebane. Pallbearers will be his grandsons.   Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made to the Oak Grove Church Cemetery Fund.
