David Hyde Johnson

April 28, 1949 — December 2, 2016

David Hyde Johnson passed away at age 73 after a long battle with cancer on Friday, December 2nd surrounded by his children. Survived by his wife of 47 years, Mary McEniry Johnson, and by their children Sarah (Mrs. Garth Saunders), their two children Maggie and Max; Karen (Mrs. Chris Condon), their two children Coleman and Carson; Andy Johnson, wife Julie, and their two children Chayton and Piper. Also survived by his brothers, Paul (of Arkport, NY) and Bill (of Granger, IN), sisters-in-law Lee McEniry (Mrs. Jim Walen), Karen Johnson, Mary Stickley, Margaret Johnson, and by numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; Cousin Bruce Cole, and his Aunt Ruth Ann Cole. David and Mary owned Queen City Moving and Storage, agent for Mayflower, for 25 years, and Carolina Crating of Charlotte. He was active in both the Queen City Optimist Club, holding office at the local and state levels, and the Boy Scouts of America. David enjoyed golf, camping, reading, traveled all of the interstates in the continental US and Hawaii, was a debate sparker, thinker and dreamer. David longed for, and finally realized, a family compound. He tried to live by and promote the following: The Optimist Creed Promise Yourself To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind. To talk health, happiness and prosperity to every person you meet. To make all your friends feel that there is something in them. To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true. To think only of the best, to work only for the best, and to expect only the best. To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own. To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future. To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile. To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others. To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble. A family Celebration of Life is planned for a later date. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Hospice of Alamance-Caswell, 914 Chapel Hill Rd, Burlington, NC 27215.
