David Miles Shanklin, 92, of Mebane, a man of honor and courage, passed away peacefully on February 28, 2026, at the Hospice Home of Burlington. Born on September15, 1933, in Orange Co., NC, David's life was a testament to service, both to his country and his community. He was a cherished father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend who left an indelible mark on the hearts of those he touched. David's journey through life was marked by his unwavering commitment to his family. He is survived by his loving daughter, Mary Ann Shanklin Ward and her husband Johnny; his grandchildren, Matthew Hicks and his wife Whitney, and Dylan Hicks and his wife Haley; and his great-grandchildren, Keegan, Charlee, and Casen Hicks. He also leaves behind his nephews, Gary Edwards and Don Carter. His life was enriched by the love of his late wife, Patricia Andrews Shanklin, and he was preceded in death by his parents, Murdock and Lula Miles Shanklin, his daughter Karen Shanklin, and his sisters, Pearl Edwards and Frances Carter. David's legacy is one of valor and dedication. He retired from the US Army after 23 years of service, including a distinguished tenure as a Helicopter Pilot and flight instructor during the Vietnam War. His skills and bravery earned him numerous accolades, including the Purple Heart, a Silver and Bronze Star, and the Distinguished Flying Cross Medal. His service extended beyond the battlefield as he spent six months in Antarctica, working alongside the Army, National Geographic, and Texas University. The honor of having a glacier named after him was a source of great pride for David. After his military career, David continued to serve his community with the same fervor. He retired from the Hillsborough Post Office after 19 years, where he was known for his dedication and friendly demeanor. His volunteer work at the VA Hospital in Durham showcased his compassion and commitment to fellow veterans. David was also a proud member of the Mebane American Legion Post 920 and the VFW, where he found camaraderie and support among his peers. David's Christian faith was an integral part of his life, and he was a devoted member of Lebanon UMC. His faith guided him through life's challenges and triumphs, and it was a source of comfort and strength for him and his family. The story of David Miles Shanklin is one of a life well-lived, marked by service, love, and an unwavering commitment to his principles. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his legacy will continue to inspire future generations. David's life reminds us of the impact one person can have on the world, and he will be remembered with respect and admiration for years to come.

A graveside service will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday March 6, 2026 at Lebanon UMC Cemetery with the Pastor Steve Jordan officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 Until 8:00 PM on Thursday March 5, 2026, at the McClure Funeral Home in Mebane and other times at the residence. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Mebane American Legion 920 at 506 West Clay St. Mebane, NC 27302 or to the Durham VA Hospital at https://www.va.gov/durham-health-care/work-with-us/volunteer-or-donate/
