Mebane

Donald (Don) Ray Rees, 89, of Mebane, passed away peacefully at his home on March 5th. Born on August 2, 1935, in Muncie, Indiana, to the late Josephine and Raymond Rees, Don was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He is survived by his loving wife, Darlene Simmons Rees; his children Rick Rees and wife Janice Sniker, Cindy and husband Paul Kosinski, and Dylan Tyler Harden; his brother Larry and wife Marilyn Rees; his grandchildren Samantha (Kyle) Estrada, Madeline Rees, and Emily Rees; his stepchildren John and wife Mandy Harden, and Christina and husband MJ Forrest; his step-grandchildren Olivia Lee, Kimberlyn Harden, and Maizie Harden; and his cherished fur babies, Stormy and Breezy. He was preceded in death by his son, Philip M. Rees, his parents, and his late wife, Phyllis Jean (Long) Rees. Don was an avid sportsman in his youth, participating in football, basketball, and baseball during his high school years. His talent on the field earned him a tryout with the Chicago White Sox, but his path led him to a career in mortgage lending, which took him and his family across many states. When they arrived in North Carolina, they knew it would be their forever home. In the early 2000’s, Don faced the heartbreaking loss of his first wife, Phyllis, to cancer. Despite this, Don found love again with Darlene, and together they raised another child, Dylan, who Don always considered his own. They enjoyed twenty wonderful years together before his passing from heart disease. In keeping with Don’s wishes, no service will be held. The family invites you to offer your condolences to them in this time of loss. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Gentiva Hospice of Burlington for their compassionate care and support during this difficult time.

He was a husband, strong and true, A father’s love, both deep and new. Stepdad, grandpa, friend to all, Always there with a joke or call. He loved the game, the thrill, the cheer, IU pride ran strong and clear. Crimson and Cream, through thick and thin. With laughter bright, a teasing jest, His playful heart was at its best. Stormy and Breezy by his side, Loyal friends, his joy, his pride. Through wins and losses, highs and lows, His love endured, it always showed. A steady hand, a guiding light, Now resting in the peaceful night. Though he has gone, his spirit stays, In memories warm, in endless days. We’ll laugh again, we’ll hold him near, His love remains, and we feel it here. - By Christina Forrest - In Honor of Don
