January 28, 1927 — August 5, 2018

Dorothy Elizabeth “Dottie” Smith Scott, 91, died Sunday, August 5, 2018 at the Presbyterian Home of Hawfields. She was born on January 28, 1927 in Huntersville, NC to Charles Herbert Smith and Elizabeth Blythe Smith. Most of her childhood was spent in Sumter, SC where she graduated from high school before returning with her family to NC. She graduated from the Woman’s College of the University of North Carolina (now UNC-Greensboro) in 1948 and then taught at Huntersville High School for one year. In 1949, she married her husband of 53 years, P.W. “Slick” Scott, who died in 2003.

Dottie was an active member of Hawfields Presbyterian Church until her health failed. She served on various committees of the women of the church. She was instrumental in the opening and development of the Hawfields Presbyterian Church Kindergarten, which opened in 1965, and she served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees. Dottie also served on the Board of Directors of the Presbyterian Home of Hawfields from 1984-1993.

Later in her life, Dottie furthered her education at the Technical College of Alamance (now Alamance Community College) where she received an Associate’s Degree in Food Service Management when she was 59. She was the director of the Durham County Meals on Wheels for several years. She also catered weddings and business functions in the Mebane area, using the name “Dottie’s Delights”.

She was an outstanding cook and an accomplished seamstress, a resourceful and talented homemaker who supported her husband throughout their years of dairy farming. She met life's challenges, great and small, with grace and dignity. She will be remembered with love by her family and friends.
