Douglas W. Isaac
MEBANE — Douglas (“Doug”) W. Isaac, 88, of Mebane, North Carolina passed away on Monday, November 29, 2021 at Peak Resources Brookshire of Hillsborough. A native of Marion, North Carolina, Doug graduated Marion High School and soon-after married his lifelong love Jeanne Matthews in 1953. He earned his pharmacy degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, class of 1956, and served in the U.S. Army upon graduation.
Following his military service, Doug and Jeanne moved to Mebane on the promise of a job opportunity; and in 1958, Doug officially joined Calvin Oakley as an assistant pharmacist at Warren’s Drug Store on Clay Street. The two worked together for several years before being joined by Ken Capes. Doug and Ken jointly purchased the business in 1980 and continued to serve the citizens of Mebane together for several decades until Doug retired in April of 1999.
A member of First Baptist Church of Mebane since 1958, Doug sang in the adult choir for more than 60 years, was a member of the Harris Men’s Sunday School class, and was an Ordained Life Deacon. He was honored by the Piedmont Carolina Chapter of the American Red Cross for Extraordinary Personal Action during his time as a pharmacist after saving a young man from choking in 1979. Doug was also recognized by the Alamance County Medical Society for his contributions in the 1964 mass immunization campaign to eradicate polio. Additionally, he volunteered with Alamance County Meals on Wheels for many years.
Doug enjoyed taking long walks about town, sharing meals with his family and close friends, and always saved room for a moon pie or scoop of chocolate ice cream.
Survivors include his son, Woody Isaac and wife Libby; daughter Marie Pennington and husband Alan; his grandchildren, Wil Isaac and wife Julie, Scott Isaac and wife Amelia, Landon Lewis and husband Justin, Bailey Pennington and fiancé Dave Allison; great grandchildren, Sadie, Noah and Dawson; brother-in-law, Bill Matthews and wife Lydia; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Matthews; eight nieces and nephews. Doug is preceded in death by his wife Jeanne Matthews Isaac and parents Woodrow and Voy Isaac.
A service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 4, 2021 at the First Baptist Church of Mebane (301 S. Third Street) with the Pastor Sammy Ballard officiating. Burial rites will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Mebane.  The family will receive friends prior to the service from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and other times at the residence of the family.
The family would like to thank Doug’s numerous caregivers for their support: Emily Keck, Mandi Ballard, the staff of Greater Care Services, the staff of Peak Resources Brookshire in Hillsborough, and the staff of Amedisys, Inc. Hospice.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the First Baptist Church of Mebane Building Fund or the Alzheimer’s Association – Western Carolina Chapter.
