Doug Mitchell, 76, of Mebane, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on July 9, 2024, surrounded by his wife and children.
Born on February 29, 1948 in Cincinnati, Ohio to Ruth and Leighton Mitchell, Doug was a leap-year baby who brought joy and laughter to everyone he met. He graduated from Walnut Hills High School in 1966, and he went on to earn his Bachelor of Science in Zoology degree from Ohio State University in 1971. Doug's Buckeye pride was evident throughout his life, and he never missed an opportunity to cheer on his beloved team.
Doug's career in sales was a remarkable journey of growth and achievement. It began in Columbus, Ohio and, through a series of promotions, led the family to North Carolina. He retired in 2014 leaving behind a legacy of hard work and dedication.
Doug was blessed and proud of his three children: Brooke, Shelby, and Rob. He married his soulmate, Phyllis Hoffman in 2014 . The two shared a deep bond and enjoyed many happy years together, often spending time at Hyco Lake, attending concerts, or relaxing on their back porch with their beloved cat, Ali. His love for his family was unwavering, and he cherished every moment that he spent with them.
Doug will be remembered for his jokester personality, competitive spirit, and enthusiasm for the Ohio State Buckeyes. Those who loved him will also recall his passion for all genres of music, his signature neon ball cap, his love of scotch and, mostly, his unwavering dedication to his family; especially his grandchildren who called him “Papaw.” Doug made many friends through bowling, boating, and his responsibility as HOA president. His legacy of kindness, service, and goofy group photos will live on through his children and grandchildren.
Doug is survived by his wife, Phyllis Hoffman; his children, Brooke Hondros (John), Shelby Shirley (Jason), and Robert Mitchell (Kim); his step-children, Scott Lewis (Emily) and Aaron Lewis (Amanda); his seven grandchildren, Blaikley, Carter, Jack, John Peter Jr., Anderson, Jacob, and Leighton; his three step-grandchildren, Lillian, Noah, and Levi; his brother, Torrey Mitchell (Linda) of Iowa; his beloved cat, Ali; and a host of family and friends who will miss him dearly.
A celebration of Doug's life will be held at the Village at Lake Michael Clubhouse: 1001 Village Lake Dr. Mebane, NC, on July 19, 2024, from 4 pm to 7 pm. Casual attire is requested, especially your favorite college shirt (excluding the University of Michigan, of course). The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to all who have provided support during this difficult time.
