Mrs. Ellen Lawrence of, Mebane NC, died Saturday August 17, 2019, after declining illness. She was called back to the Lord at age 82. A native of Orange County, Hillsborough NC, she was born August 16, 1937 and was the daughter of Hubert M. Turner Sr and Frances Howard Turner, both deceased and was the wife of Henry Carlton Lawrence, Sr, also deceased, the love of her life, married for 52 years.

Ellen was an active member of the Hawfields Presbyterian Church, a senior member of the Hawfields Presbyterian Women, a former member of the Mebane Junior Women's Club and the Gay Blades Garden Club. She was active in leadership in the Alamance County Child Care Association. Ellen served proudly for six years as the Commissioner for the first NC Child Care Commission for Children under the administration of Governor Robert Scott.

She gradutaed from Mebane Public School in 1955 as co-validictorian, sharing this honor with her dear friend Anne. She attended Women's College in Greensboro, now UNC-G, studying Home Economics and Early Childhood Education. She continued her education in early childhood development through Alamance Community College, Durham Community College, and UNC Greensboro.

Shortly after Early Childhood Education, Ellen was called and employed by the newly established Hawfields Presbyterian Child Care, remaining in quality care and education for 50 years, retiring 8/1/2014. In retirement, Ellen served as a board member on the Mebane Historical Museum and at her favorite location, on the Board of the Whaler Inn in Pine Knoll Shores, NC.

Ellen's family includes one daughter, Jane Claire Lawrence Love of Mebane, son-in-law David M Love, two sons Henry (Hank) C Lawrence, Jr of Burlington, daughter-in-law Lynn Kistler Lawrence, John Matthew (Matt) Lawrence, daughter-in-law Connie Covington Lawrence of Mebane.

Grandchildren include Lindsey E. Love Moore (Jeremy D, Moore) of Raleigh, Macon Thomas Lawrence of Mebane, Nicholas (Nick) Turner Lawrence of Mebane,and R. Tucker Lawrence of Winston Salem. Great grandchildren are Turner J Moore and Levi J Moore of Raleigh. She is also survived by a brother, Hubert Morrison (Morrie) Turner, Jr. and wife Charlotte of Hope Mills, NC.

Ellen felt it was a blessing being the daughter of Christian parents and a special privilege being a sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend to many. She said the blessing and callings in her life were her faith, her family, her friends and her special 50 years of calling in the fellowship as teacher and Director of Hawfields Child Care Center.

A service to remember and celebrate her life will be at Hawfields Presbyterian Church conducted by Reverend David Ealy on Wednesday, August 21st 2019 at 2 pm.  Burial will follow the service in the Hawfields Presbyterian Church Cementery.  Prior to the service, the family will greet friends from 5-7 pm on Tuesday, August 20th, 2019 at McClure Funeral Home in Mebane, NC.
