Elwyn Hardin Lowe, Sr.

Mr. Elwyn Hardin Lowe, 87, of Burlington, NC, passed away August 7, 2015 at home with his family by his side. Elwyn was born January 15, 1928 in Jacksonville, FL to Buena Vista and Mary Boyd Hardin Lowe. He graduated from Landon High School in 1945 then enrolled at Duke University. In 1946, Elwyn joined the U.S. Navy to serve his country in WWII. He served at naval bases in Great Lakes, IL, Corpus Christie, TX, and Boca Chica, FL. Upon completing military service in 1948, Elwyn returned to Duke University and earned his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering in 1951. He worked 38 years for Western Electric and AT&T retiring in 1989. He was a longstanding member of the First United Methodist Church (FUMC) in Graham, NC where he served as Sunday school class president. Elwyn enjoyed spending time with his family, genealogy, Duke basketball, crossword puzzles, and golf. Elwyn is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Barbara Moore Lowe, his four children, Nancy Lowe McGuire and husband Marty, Ellen Lowe Hilyer and husband Dan, Martha Lowe Neal and husband Phil, and Elwyn Hardin Lowe Jr. and wife Kelly, and by his grandchildren, Laura Grant McGuire, Elizabeth Brolin McGuire, Meredith McGuire Conley and husband Nicholas, Douglas Grant Hilyer, Mary Ellen Neal, Jacob Webb Neal, Taylor Elizabeth Lowe, Ashlyn Moore Lowe, and Elwyn Hardin Lowe III. Services will be held at FUMC, 303 N Main Street, Graham, NC on Sunday, August 9, 2015 at 3 o’clock with Pastor Kevin Baker officiating. The family will receive friends in the church parlor before the service from 1-3 o’clock. Burial will follow at Alamance Memorial Park with Military Honors. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in honor of Elwyn Hardin Lowe to FUMC Graham at 303 N Main St, Graham, NC 27253 and Hospice of Alamance/Caswell at 918 Chapel Hill Rd.
