Ernest Griggs Nolen Sr.

Mr. Ernest Griggs Nolen Sr. 94, of 509 Paris Street, Graham, NC passed away on Wednesday June 1, 2016 at the Hospice and Palliative Care Center of Alamance. A native of Swisher County, TX, he was the son of the late Clifford and Maggie Griggs Nolen. Mr. Nolen was a member of the First Baptist Church in Graham for over 60 years where he served as a Deacon and did numerous jobs around the church to help. He worked with Burlington Engineering and Carolina Steel with 32 years of service. After retirement he went to work with Triangle Welding. He enjoyed playing golf and was proud to have two hole-in-ones at Southwick Golf Course in Graham. Mr. Nolen was a WWII Veteran of the US ARMY serving in the Anti-Tank Division and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He was a kind and caring person who was always willing to help neighbors, friends and family. Mr. Nolen was also an avid wood worker. Survivors include his wife of the home, Frances Andrews Kimrey Nolen; daughter, Paulette “Polly” Nolen-Jones and husband Cliff, of Ontario Canada; son, Ernest “Ernie” Nolen Jr. and wife Susan, of Hamilton, NY; step son, Ron Kimrey and wife Sue, of Graham; grandchildren, Corey Nolen and wife Lauren, Keslie Nolen, and Eliza Nolen; sister, Mary N. Turner, of TX; step grandchildren, Steve Jones and wife Sue, Glenn Jones, and Todd Jones and wife Karen; and many beloved nieces and nephews in NC and TX. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Irene Robertson Nolen; sister, Myrtle Maye Chance; brothers, LW and Paul Nolen. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday June 3, 2016 at the First Baptist Church of Graham with the Pastor Travis Russell officiating. Burial will follow in Alamance Memorial Park with Military Honors. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 PM on Thursday June 2, 2016 at the McClure Funeral Home in Graham, and other times at the residence of the family.
