Eugene (Gene) Frederick Woodworth

Eugene (Gene) Frederick Woodworth 89, formerly of Salamanca and Great Valley NY passed peacefully to the Lord early Monday May 19th at the Brookdale Assisted Living facility in Burlington NC. Born on June 10th 1935 in Woodworth Hollow (Salamanca), he was the son of the late LeRoy and Genevieve (Reynolds) Woodworth. He was married to his lovely bride Margaret (Peggy) Louise (Holland) Woodworth on May 5th 1956 in Salamanca NY who survives. Gene was a retired employee of the B&O-CSX Railroad, working his way up from storekeeper to Locomotive engineer later in his career. Prior to moving to Burlington NC, he and Peggy were active members of Our Lady of Peace Parish RC church serving many years as Eucharistic Ministers, and Gene also serving as a minister of hospitality (Usher), as well and many other functions. Gene was instrumental in laying the ground work of the establishment of the Knights of Columbus Council #12594 Pope John Paul II at Our Lady of Peace parish. Gene was both Grand Knight 3rd degree, a Worthy Faithful Navigator 4th degree, and District Deputy for the Southern Tier region of Western NY. In retirement he enjoyed hunting, horseracing, gardening, rooting for all Buffalo sports teams, as well as the St. Bonaventure University men’s basketball team and the NY Yankees. Surviving besides his wife of 69 years are: three sons Michael (Sheila – deceased) Woodworth of Cumby, TX, Christian (Cheryl – deceased) Woodworth of Jasper TN, and David Woodworth of Olean NY. A daughter Judy (Richard) Dry of Graham NC. Nine grandchildren Ashley (Jayson) Neumann Efland NC, Mindy (Zac) Brigante Port St. John FL, Matthew Dry Eglin AFB FL, Mark Dry Efland NC, Abigail Dry Port St. John FL, Adam (Ashton) Woodworth Sulphur Springs TX, Elizabeth Woodworth Cumby TX, Alex (Josh) Roland Stover MO, and Megan Woodworth Jasper TN. Twelve great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by five sisters Alice (LeRoy) Hutchison, Shirley (Charles) Ullman, Mary (Greg) Krantz, Ida Woodworth and Martha Woodworth. Four brothers; James Woodworth, Charles (Betina) Woodworth, Douglas (Sharon) Woodworth, and Thomas Woodworth. There will be no visitation. A funeral mass will be held at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church 1620 Hanford Rd Graham NC on Friday June 20th. A celebration of life and final burial (internment – Calvary cemetery Salamanca NY) is to be scheduled sometime in July.
