On May 23, 2026, at 10:53pm, Everett O. Smith passed through the Pearl Gates to eternally be wrapped in the arms of his Saviour. Everett Smith, a beloved and cherished husband, dad, paw paw, uncle and friend to so many, looked forward to meeting his Saviour face to face, after living in His presence for so many years.
Everett (his father was Mr. Smith) was born in Duke Hospital on November 26, 1941. He would ask folks to guess how much it cost, and loved to tell them 25 dollars.
His dad and mom had a small farm on Old Greensboro Hwy. His dad taught him to work hard and to sell. They hauled their farm products to Durham, and sold house to house beginning when he was 12 years of age. His mom taught him to love God and everyone. There was no person that was not to be loved. Whether or not they appeared, talked, or were raised like you, everyone was to be loved. He pleasured in telling of his mom admonishing the children to be kind to everyone and especially to those who might have less than themselves. He would say that he thought to himself that he couldn’t imagine anyone having less than him, but that if he should ever see anyone, he would certainly be kind to them.
There are a few people who have touched as many individual lives at Everett did. He had a way of strengthening the weak, and encouraging those he met. Ever the storyteller, one of Everett’s favorite stories is how he met his wife Verna and married her on the second date. He enjoyed telling of his wife’s first husband making the morning coffee.
All of the testimonies of Everett’s endless kindness, generosity, and encouragement could never be told. They will forever live in the hearts of thousands of people. They could never be forgotten. As many have said, Everett Smith was a true pillar of the community. He will be greatly missed and never replaced. The time has come when Heaven needed him more than he was needed here.
A visitation will be held to honor Everett’s life at McClure Funeral Home in Mebane on Saturday, May 30, 2026, from 2:00pm-6:00pm.
