Frank Herbert Payne, passed away peacefully on December 28, 2024, at the age of 96. Born on November 23, 1928, Herbert’s life was a testament to the joy and love he brought to everyone around him. His warm smile and generous spirit will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. He is survived by his loving daughters, Diana Lance and Kay Hendricks. His legacy continues through his four grandchildren, Travis Hackney (Tina), Crystal Edwards (Joe), Dustin Bradsher, and Dylan Hendricks (Chelsea), as well as his six great-grandchildren, Mason, Hunter, and Emma Hackney, Makala Moore, and Oakley and Carter Hendricks. Herbert also leaves behind his sisters, Rachel Wilkinson, Joyce Clayton, and Faye Payne. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 71 years Colleen Payne, parents, Foy and Helen Bray Payne, his brothers, Howard, Hugh, and Norman Payne, and his sister, Esther Caviness. Herbert’s passion for life was evident in his hobbies and interests. He was often found in the early morning hours on his pontoon boat, gliding across the serene waters of Frogsboro. With a fishing rod in hand and the gentle lapping of the water against the boat, he found peace and solitude. His catch of the day would often be the centerpiece of the much-anticipated Friday night dinners, where family and friends gathered around the table to enjoy the fruits of his labor. Dancing was another of Herbert’s joys. He could be found swaying to the rhythms of Oldies and beach music, a broad smile on his face as he moved with the music. His love for dance was infectious. Above all, Herbert's love for his family was the cornerstone of his life. He cherished every moment spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, each of whom held a special place in his heart. The memories created during these precious times will be treasured by his family forever. A funeral service will be held at 2pm on January 5, 2025 in the McClure Funeral Chapel in Mebane. The family will receive friends at the funeral home prior to the service on Sunday from 1pm-2pm. Interment will follow in Oakwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Alamance County Meals on Wheels.
