Gerald A. Ashley, age 70 of Efland, died February 10, 2018. Gerald was born in Person County on December 26, 1947. He grew up in Alamance County. Gerald was a disabled veteran and a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans. He served in the US Army as a combat infantryman in Vietnam, and was awarded several medals, including the Vietnam Service medal with 4 Bronze Stars and the National Defense Service Medal. He was most proud of his Soldiers Medal, which was awarded for extreme heroism during non-combat operations. Gerald was well-known for his love of farming and was happiest on a tractor. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Clara Ashley, Brother Locket Ashley, and sister Sara King. Survivors include his loving wife of 50 years Dianne Albright Ashley, son Christopher (Jameka), daughter Kelly (Kenji). Other survivors include his six Granddaughters, who were the light of his life, Cherise "Gaby" and Carly Ashley, Mikaela and Maiya Glenn, Kailah and Kassidy McCain; sisters, Delores Hawkins (Jiggs), Patsy Vereen, and Billie Bauer (Gary). A funeral service will be held at 2:00pm on Thursday February 15, 2018 at Oak Grove Baptist Church with Pastor Wayne Howard and Pastor Chris Hamblen officiating. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery with Military Honors. The family will receive friends on Wednesday February 14, 2018 from 6-8 at McClure Funeral Service in Mebane and at other times at the residence.
