Harold Edward Hewitt, Jr. (Ed), age 78, passed away at COMPASS Healthcare and Rehab in Mebane, North Carolina, on December 16, 2024. He was born on September 4, 1946 in Newton to the late Mildred and the late Harold Hewitt. He is survived by his only sibling, his sister, Jan Hemphill, of Mebane, and her husband, Rick. Ed was much more than a brother and brother-in-law; he was a best friend to both Jan and Rick. He is also survived by 6 nieces and nephews and their spouses, and 22 great nieces and nephews. He was adored by all of them and was known as their beloved Uncle Ed.
Ed graduated from Newton Conover High School in 1964 and entered UNC Chapel Hill in the fall. He graduated from Carolina in May of 1968. He came back to Newton and taught chemistry at Hickory High School for 3 years until he decided to go to Pharmacy School at Carolina. He graduated in 1973. After graduation, he did an internship in Fort Worth, Texas and then went to work at Duke Medical Center. In the spring of 1978, Ed became the director of Pharmacy at Grand Strand Hospital in Myrtle Beach and was there for 15 years. In 1994, his assistant pharmacist at the hospital and best friend, Conrad Banks, Jr., decided to open their own business, Responsive Solutions, Inc; a Home Infusion Pharmacy. Ed was very passionate about his work. He loved his patients and made a difference in so many lives. Ed continued to work until 2018 when he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and Lewy Body Dementia. In 2020, he moved to Mebane to be closer to Jan and her family. They had four wonderful years together sharing lots and lots of memories. He will be greatly missed.
While living in Myrtle Beach, Ed was an active member of First Presbyterian Church for over 40 years. He also was a big supporter of St. Jude’s Children Hospital. He loved North Carolina football and especially North Carolina basketball. He also loved to have his family visit him in Myrtle Beach where lots of memories were made.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, December 21, at 11:00 a.m. at Eastview Cemetery in Newton with his uncle, Rev. J.A. Harbinson, officiating. He will be interred beside his mother and father.
