Harold Lee Sykes

August 15, 1931 — July 15, 2016

Mr. Harold Lee Sykes, 84, of 5921 Bradshaw Quarry Rd., Efland, NC, passed away on Friday July 15, 2016 at the Liberty Lane Hospice Home with the W.G. Bill Heffner VA Medical Center in Salisbury, NC. A native of Alamance County, NC he was the son of the late William Everett and Bessie Holmes Sykes. Mr. Sykes was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and friend to many. He was known for being a great man and he still believed that a person’s word is their bond, a handshake still meant something. He was proudly retired from the US NAVY serving during the Korean War as well as the Vietnam War. He served on multiple ships with his favorite being the USS New Jersey, BB-62 as Chief Gunners Mate. Harold was so very proud of each who serves or served in the military no matter the position, he respected them all. He also retired from General Electric in Mebane and enjoyed keeping up with today’s politics. Mr. Sykes was a longtime member of Oak Grove Baptist Church in Mebane. Survivors include his daughters, Lynn (Steve) Singleton, of MO, Cheryl (Mike) Apple, of Efland, Carol Williams (Mike Hertzler), of FL, Annette (Buck) Owens, of MO; sons, Harold (Adele) Sykes II, of Efland and Stanley Everett (Marsha) Sykes, of GA; 10 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren; many loving nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Carrie Causey Sykes and his loving brothers and sisters. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday July 19, 2016 at the Oak Grove Baptist Church in Mebane with the Rev. Mike Morrison officiating. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 PM on Monday July 18, 2016 at the McClure Funeral Home in Mebane, and other times at the residence of the family.
