Harper "Buck" Ervin Dickens, Jr.

Heaven gained a sweet, gentle soul on April 14, 2023. He was a Christ follower, Husband, Father, Pawpaw, Great Pawpaw, Uncle, Brother, Brother-In-Law, Friend and Veteran. Mr. Harper Ervin “Buck” Dickens, Jr. 93, passed away at the Hospice Home of Burlington. A native of Alamance County, NC, he was the son of the late Harper Ervin Dickens, Sr. and Lucy Younts Dickens. Buck was a proud veteran of the US ARMY serving during the Korean conflict. He was a life long member of Carolina Christian Church and served as a Sunday School Teacher, awarded Deacon Emeritus with the Church, and an outstanding organist and pianist which he loved to play for the congregation. Buck served as the Treasurer for 20 years for the Firefighter’s Relief Fund Board for the Faucette Township Volunteer Fire Department. Buck looked after and maintained the Carolina Cemetery for numerous years. Surviving is his loving wife, Betty Jean Councilman Dickens; his sons, E. Reid Dickens and Neal Dickens and wife Joye; his grandchildren, Mitch Dickens and wife Caitlin, Makenzie Simmons and husband Matt, Clark Dickens and wife Erica, and Layna McAlister and husband Sam; his special great grandchildren, Gracee, Easton, Lily, Griffin and Titus; sisters, Pricilla Brande and husband Laverne, and Judy Grubbs and husband Wilbert, and many loving nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Buck was preceded in death by a son, Joel Dickens, and his sisters, Margaret Loy, Edna Hall, Esther Louise Dickens, Catherine Dickens, Alice Jean Farrell, and Nan Spears. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday April 17, 2023 at the Carolina Christian Church. Officiating will be Pastor Mark Mitchell, his son, Pastor Reid Dickens, and his nephew, Phillip Brande. The family will receive friends from 12:30 PM until 1:45 PM prior to the service on Monday at Carolina Christian Church. Burial will follow with Military Honors at Carolina Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Carolina Christian Church at 2030 Carolina Rd. Burlington, NC 27217. McClure Funeral Service in Graham is assisting the family.
