Harriet Janet Cheek Evans

August 19, 1932 — June 23, 2013

GRAHAM - Mrs. Harriet Janet Cheek Evans, 80, of Tysor Circle, Graham, N.C., passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 23, 2013, at 12:55 p.m. at the Hospice and Palliative Care Center in Burlington with her family. She was born in Yadkin County, N.C. and was the daughter of the late Lester M. and Nora Lucinda Cheek. She graduated from Jonesville High School in May of 1951 and was married for 60 wonderful years to the late Grover "Bill" Evans. She worked at Textile Industries and retired from Culp Weaving where she was an inspector in the tufting department for many years. "Nanny," as many may have known her, was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend to everyone she met. Her positive attitude was contagious and her laughter and smile could light up any room. Her happiest times were spent with her grandchildren, who were the light of her life, watching NASCAR Racing while cheering for Jeff Gordon, and working in her garden. Her family will truly miss her sweet and kind nature and they ¬¬hope to continue to bring her spirit to life every day. She is survived by her daughters Barbara Melton and Richard Hall, of Graham, Linda Evans and Rick Moore, of Pleasant Garden, and son Clifton William Evans and wife Ann, of Greensboro. She is also survived by her grandchildren Justin William Melton and wife Mamta, of Greenville, N.C., Ashley Melton, of Graham, Kristen Evans and Wallis Collie, of Arlington, Va., and Matt Evans and fiancée Ashli Osteen, of Winter Park, Colo.; great-granddaughter, Mollie Asha Melton; sisters, Peggy Case, of Walkertown N.C, and Sandra Whitney, of Flushing, Mich. She was preceded in death by her sister Margaret T. Perdue, and brothers, Johnny and wife Jeanie Cheek and Jerry Cheek. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 26, 2013, at the McClure Funeral Home Chapel in Graham with visitation one hour prior to the service. At other times the family will receive friends at the residence of the daughter, Barbara Melton, at 501 Jones Street, Graham, N.C. Burial will be held in Graham Memorial Park. Officiating will be the Rev. Carolyn Burrus. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Hospice and Palliative Care Center of Alamance/Caswell at 918 Chapel Hill Road. Burlington, N.C. 27215.
