Henry Alvis Oakley went home to Heaven on May 6, 2025. He passed away peacefully at his home of 70 years with his daughter present. He was 97. Alvis was born in Rougemont, NC to the late J. Graham and Lora Welch Oakley on November 28, 1927. He was married to the love of his life, the late Kathleen Dickey Oakley (1931-2013). He missed her everyday of his life after her passing. He is survived by his two children, Barry Oakley and Chandra Herriman; three grandchildren, Beneth (Seth) Smith, Neil (Amy) Herriman, and Caitlin Herriman; 8 great grandchildren, Caleigh, Judah, Adah, Asher, Liri, and Ransom Smith, and Alexandra and Killian Herriman; and a sister, Daphine Phelps. Alvis was also preceded in death by a brother, Harold N. Oakley. Alvis served in the US 7th Army during the Korean War (1952-1954). He worked as an artillery mechanic and transportation leader. He was stationed in Germany for majority of his time in the Army. Alvis worked at Western Electric as an Inspector for 35 years in Burlington and Winston Salem. After retiring, Alvis volunteered for Meals on Wheels and ARMC for 26 years, driving for their shuttle services. He was a member of the VFW Post 1920. Alvis was a life-long farmer, sharing his garden produce with family and friends. He strived for the “perfect” tomato. Alvis was an avid Duke basketball fan. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday May 10, 2025, at the First Baptist Church of Mebane with the Pastors Sammy Ballard and Judy Butler officiating. Burial will follow with Military Honors in Oakwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 PM prior to the service at the church on Saturday.
