Herbert Thornton

August 6, 1939 — March 4, 2017

Herbert Thornton Jr., 80, went home to be with the Lord on March 4, 2017 at Duke University Hospital. He was a veteran of the US Army and later retired from the U.S. Coast Guard. He attended Northgate Chapel in Durham where he served his church in many different capacities. He was a Freemason and Shriner. Herb spent his younger years serving in the military. In 1977, he retired and received his builder’s contractor license. He enjoyed building homes for many years, and while building, made many friends through his work and community. Herb was a dedicated husband, family member and community person. He took much pleasure in helping others and most of all supporting the work of the Lord Jesus. Survivors include his wife, Lucindy Warren, daughter, Vicki Patterson (Tim) of Julian, grandchildren; Meleah Printz, Michaela Catlett, Matthew Patterson, 6 great grandchildren, sisters: Anice Anderson, Iris Johnson, Rose Marie Driscoll, sisters-in-law: Marsha Wade (Ronnie), Deborah Warren-Hicks (Bill) and many loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Maude Goad and Herbert Thornton Sr. and a brother Harold Thornton. A funeral service will be held at 3:00 on Tuesday March 7, 2017 at The Lambs Chapel. The family will receive friends from 1:30-2:30 on Tuesday at the Church. Burial will follow at Crossroads Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
