James Edward Overbey

James Edward Overbey, age 82, of Cedar Grove, North Carolina, passed away on September 23, 2026, at his residence in Orange County, North Carolina. He was born on January 28, 1944, at the family homeplace in Orange County, North Carolina, and he lived a life rooted in the values of hard work, faith, family, and a deep appreciation for the land he loved. James was the son of the late Sidney and Hazel Farrar Overbey. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Donnie Dement. James retired from Cone Mills after more than 30 years of dedicated service as an Instrumentation Specialist. He was respected for his strong work ethic, his steady presence, and the pride he took in doing his job well. His long career reflected the same dependability and commitment that he carried into every part of his life. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish. James found great joy in the outdoors and was especially proud to teach his children and grandchildren the ways of the land. He shared with them not only his skills, but also his respect for nature, patience, and the satisfaction that comes from time spent together in the open air. His family land meant the world to him, and he took great pleasure in growing blueberries, muscadines, and apples for his friends and family to pick and enjoy. James will be lovingly remembered by his daughters, Janet Freeland and husband James L., and Sharon Dement; his son, Gary W. Overbey and wife Crystal; and his grandchildren, Teighla Norris and husband Adam, Richard B. Triplett, Cameron J. Triplett and wife Kymree, Lori Freeland and fiancé Webster Massengale, Alec Dement and wife Anna, Connor Overbey and wife Shanna, James B. Freeland, and Evan Dement and fiancé Sadie Graham. He is also survived by eight loving great-grandchildren, who brought him great joy and pride. Those who knew James will remember him as a great family man and a godly man. He lived with quiet strength, generosity, and a heart that was always centered on the people and places he loved most. His legacy will continue through the many lives he touched, the lessons he passed down, and the memories shared by those who were blessed to know him. James Edward Overbey leaves behind a family who will cherish his memory and honor the example he set throughout his life. His love for his family, his devotion to the land, and his steadfast spirit will remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM on Monday September 28, 2026, at the McClure Funeral Home Chapel in Mebane with Tim Britt officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Zion Christian Church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Monday.
