Jane Johnson

Martha “Jane” Warren Hook Johnson passed away on Tuesday, November 29, 2022 at Croasdaile Village in Durham, NC.  She was born on July 18, 1928 in Prospect Hill, NC to Irving and Mary Warren.  Graduated from Prospect Hill High School and Elon College.  Married her college sweetheart, Brevitt Hook in 1947.

In 1959, Brevitt and Jane moved to Mebane, where he opened a dental practice.  They joined the Mebane United Methodist Church.  This was the beginning of Jane’s life long passion.  At the local church she served as Sunday School teacher, choir member, chairperson of the Council on Ministries, Administrative Board and Lay Leader.  At the district level she served as district lay leader, Christian Worker School Board member, Superintendent Committee chairperson, and district representative to the Conference Council on Ministries.  Experience gained her the Presidency of the United Methodist Women of the NC Conference.  The NC Conference elected her Dean of Conference Summer School, Trustee to the Methodist Retirement Home, member of the Methodist Foundation and Trustee of Methodist University.  She was elected to the General and Jurisdictional Conferences, the World Methodist Council, and the British Methodist Conference.  Her leadership and devotion to the United Methodist Women and the United Methodist Church was rewarded with the Methodist University Medallion.

After Brevitt’s passing in 1982, Jane married Lehman Johnson in 1985.  A Methodist with another one of her passions, golfing.  Introduced by a Methodist Preacher, they were married 24 years, and traveled around the world playing golf.

Jane is preceded in death by her husbands, her parents, and granddaughter, Augusta Bartis Warner (Louis).  Survived by her sons and daughters:  Warren Hook (Bonnie), MJ Snelling (Nate), Burton Hook (Susan Duncan), and Jean Bartis (Angie); granddaughters: Krystal Hook, Stephanie Hook, Nicolette Roberson (Justin); and a great grandson, Warren Roberson.  She is also survived by four stepchildren: Lee Johnson (Mary Deane), the late Julian Johnson (Mary Jo), Steve Johnson (Connie), and Candy Arey (Robert).

A celebration of life will be held Saturday, December 10, 2022 at 2:00pm at Mebane United Methodist Church.  Family members will greet friends prior to the service from 1:00-2:00pm.  The service will be followed by a private family burial at the Cooper Cemetery, Prospect Hill. The family will receive friends at other times at the home of Jean and Angie Bartis.

The family requests in lieu of flowers, any remembrances in her honor be given to Mebane United Methodist Church, 200 South Fourth Street, Mebane, NC 27302.
