Jerry Reid Webster, Sr.

August 18, 1940 — February 7, 2018

Whitsett - Jerry R. Webster, Sr., age 77, passed away peacefully February 7, 2018 with family by his side after a brief illness. Mr. Webster was born August 18, 1940 in Siler City, NC, where he attended Henry Siler School, Siler City High School, and Jordan-Matthew’s High School. After graduation, he attended High Point College. Over the years, he shared many fond memories of working at the Siler City Pool and the Siler City Drive-Inn Theater. In addition, he cherished the time spent with his friends and coaches at JM. Jerry enlisted in the US Marine Corps February 1, 1963 and proudly served his country during the Vietnam War, completing his tour of duty during 1965-66. While in Vietnam, he participated in many ground operations, including; Starlight, Piranha, Utah, and Texas to name a few. He was wounded in combat and received a Purple Heart. Most recently, Jerry was inducted into the Jordan-Matthew’s Athletics Hall of Fame for baseball and basketball (1957, 1958). He holds the Jordan-Matthews record and a state record for the most points scored in a basketball game at 51 points. In addition, he scored over 1000 points during his two-year tenure. Many will remember Jerry from his time working at Lowe’s, Stearns Chevrolet, and Discount Furniture World. Jerry leaves his sons Jay Webster and Gregg Balkcum; his daughter Sonja Mayo; his daughter-in-laws Nicole Webster and Peggy Balkcum; his sister Judy York; his cousins Linda Ladd and Linda Roberge; his grandchildren Caitlyn and Sarah Balkcum, and many friends. Jerry was preceded in death by his wife, Sylvia Webster; his parents Reid and Josephine “Josie” Webster, his stepmother, Helen Webster; his aunt Dorothy “Dot” Phipps; and his beloved dog Murphy. A service will be held at McClure Funeral Home in Graham, NC on February 17, 2018 at 11:00 AM. The family will receive friends at the funeral home following the service. They will also receive friends at the home of his son Jay. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Hospice and Palliative Care Center Alamance-Caswell, 914 Chapel Hill Rd, Burlington, NC 27215.
