Mrs. JoAnne Fleeman Thompson, 75, of 301 Pickett Lane, Mebane, NC, passed away on Monday April 13, 2015 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Dewey and Gertrude Lafon Fleeman. JoAnne was raised in Narrows, VA by her Poppy and Big Mommy. She grew up climbing trees and skinning knees. Life led her from Narrows to Salem to Mebane, NC, a journey which eventually included her four children whom she adored. JoAnne was a member of Mebane United Methodist Church. For years she was known as the “Mission Lady”. Her trips included missions to Mexico, Brazil, and Africa. She spent many Christmas Eve’s filling bags for Christmas Cheer and delivering door to door and many hours volunteering in the Church food pantry. One lady’s life touched many. Her ultimate joy in life was being Granny and Nana to her 7 beautiful grandchildren and three adorable great granddaughters. She lived, she laughed, and she loved. Her cup runneth over with love for three simple things: God, Family, and the mountains of Virginia. And when the time came for her to go home, she was where she loved most, the mountains of Virginia. A selfless, loving, feisty, funny, spunky soul left a legacy behind, one to certainly make those that knew her laugh out of the blue and say “Remember that time JoAnne said that!” She certainly will be missed and remembered. Survivors include her children, Keith Journell, of Roanoke, VA, Kimberly Journell Ashley, of Graham, Karen Journell, of Knoxville, TN, and Kristen Thompson-Riley and husband Dave, of Mebane; grandchildren, Erin Moock, Lyndsey Ashley, Jamen Allen, Jordan Mann, Jacob Mann, Hayden Mann, and Evan Mann; great grandchildren, Mackenzie Moock, Maddie Moock, and Macy Moock; God children, BT Vannavong and Sy Thong Corbett; brother, Charles Fleeman and wife Phyllis, of Pearisburg, VA. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her Husband, Norris Thompson and her grandparents, Big Mommy and Poppy. A funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM on Friday April 17, 2015 at the Mebane United Methodist Church with the Rev. Johnnie L. Wright II officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 PM on Thursday April 16, 2015 at the McClure Funeral Home in Mebane, and other times at the residence of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Mebane UMC Kids Backpack Mission at 200 South Fourth St. Mebane, NC 27302. Online condolences may be made at www.mcclurefuneralservice.net
