John Auman Alvis Sr.

John Auman Alvis Sr., 94, died on September 2, 2016 after three months of failing health. He was a well know machinist, mechanic and was superintendent of Cone Mills Granite Plant. He was a lifetime resident of Haw River, where he operated his shop since 1945. He was active in the activities of The Town of Haw River and was the director of the Haw River School Fall Festival for several years. He served as an assistant director of Scout Master and was presented the 1st Eagle Scout award. He prepared the parade floats for the Garden Club, War Mothers and Scouts. He was also a notary public. A lifelong member of the Haw River United Methodist Church where he served as an MYF Counselor, part time director of Church Camp, President of the United Methodist Men’s Club, superintendent of Sunday School and official board member and trustee of the Men’s Bible Class. He is survived by three sons; Larry Alvis, Roger Alvis and Kenny Alvis, four daughters; Rickie Coggins, Pat Alvis, Judy Alvis and Susan Alvis, 17 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. He was preceded in death by Frances Gallimore Alvis “My loving and faithful wife of 63 years”, a daughter; Elizabeth Gayle Alvis Nyman, a son; John Auman Alvis Jr., four sisters; Theora Connor, Viola Woods, Goldie Crutchfield and Beatrice Brewer. The family will receive friends on Tuesday September 6, 2016 from 6-8 at McClure Funeral and Cremation Service in Graham. At other times the family will be at the residence of his daughter Judy Alvis in Haw River. A funeral service will be held at 11:00am Wednesday September 7, 2016 at Haw River United Methodist Church with the Rev. James L. Rosser officiating. Interment will follow in Haw River Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Hospice and Palliative Care Center of Alamance-Caswell 914 Chapel Hill Rd. Burlington, NC 27215.
