John Frank "Ed" Edwards, Jr., age 72, passed away on January 19, 2026, at Compass Healthcare and Rehab in Mebane, North Carolina.
He was born in Burlington, North Carolina, on January 1, 1954, to Frank and Betty Edwards. In his younger years, John lived in several places, including Wayne, Michigan; Georgia; Texas; and Virginia Beach, Virginia, before returning to Burlington, where he graduated from Western Alamance High School, a school he was very proud of.
John loved softball and began playing on school teams at a young age. He later played for Boswell Surveyors and on a church team. He also enjoyed fishing at Carolina Beach and simply spending time at the beach. John and his friends hunted arrowheads for many years. He had a small garden and was known for giving most of what he grew away to others.
John was a friend to everyone and was always eager to help people. He worked as a surveyor for Alley, Williams, Carmen, and King for many years until his health began to fail.
He is survived by his sister, Becky Graffunder, and her husband, Dave; nephews Jeffrey Graffunder of Corinth, Texas, and Jason Graffunder and his wife, Amanda, of Burlington, North Carolina; and nieces Katie and Vanessa Graffunder.
Special thanks are extended to Hospice and to everyone at Compass Healthcare and Rehab for their excellent care. The family also wishes to thank the special friends John worked with — Gary, Craig, Fred, and Wayne — who were a great help to John and his sister, Becky.
A private service will be held at a later date.
