John Elmus Evans

Mr. John Elmus Evans, 84, of Hoover Rd. Mebane, NC, passed away on Thursday October 29, 2015 at the Hospice and Palliative Care Center of Alamance/Caswell. A native of Alamance County, he was the son of the late Elmus Roosevelt and Faye Parrish Evans and the husband of the late Minnie Hopper Evans. Daddy, Papa John was a quiet, patient man who loved to be outdoors in the woods rambling. He spent many hours with family photographing butterflies, wild flowers, and especially birds, and an occasional bear. Each spring, John started talking about his next trip to see the migrating birds at Lake Mattamuskett. He was always chasing a “good” photograph of a Bald Eagle. He always had time listen, help or take a road trip. After grandchildren and great grandchildren, whom he thought of as his own, arrived they became his shadows, and he spent many hours with them fishing, cameras in hand, traveling and he was their biggest cheerleader for all sports. He was our strength and best friend. Although he will be missed he will be with us daily as we live our lives with the lessons he taught us. Mr. Evans was veteran of the US Army serving in the Korean Conflict. Survivors include his daughters, Debbie Smith, of Burlington and Lori Anne Shipley and husband Mark of Rosman, NC; grandchildren, Blair Scott and special friend Kevin Buckner and Bradley Ellington and wife Nichole; great grandchildren, Taylor and Hayley Scott and Lexi Ellington; brother, James Evans, of Mebane; sisters, Mary Conklin and husband Lloyd, of Graham and Dottie Snipes and husband Jerry, of Efland. In addition to his parents and wife, he is preceded in death by a grandson, Blake Smith and brother, Samuel Evans. The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 4:00 PM on Saturday October 31, 2015 at the McClure Funeral Home in Mebane, and other times at the residence of the family.
