Mr. John Paul Whited, Sr., 81, departed the temporal nature of life for his Celestial home on July 24, 2015 at his home in Mebane, North Carolina, surrounded by his adoring wife and loving family. Born in Paintsville, Kentucky, he was the youngest son of Guy Edgar Whited, Sr., and Malta Whited, both of whom preceded him in death. He served in the 5th Marines, 2nd Regiment, in the Korean War, and in 1952 was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds sustained in battle. While later stationed in Miami Beach, he met, and in 1954 married, the love of his life, Fay Laverne Freshwater, of Mebane, North Carolina, of the home, who survives. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Guy Edgar Whited, Jr. and Earl Allen Whited, and sister, Rose Marie Whited. He is survived by his five children and their spouses; John Paul Whited, Jr., and wife, Daisy Whited; Garland Keith Whited, and wife, Lynn Whited; Phillip Dale Whited, and wife, Rosa Whited; Tamara Fay Whited Harvey, and husband, Bruce Harvey; and Dr. Doby Wrenn Whited, and wife, Beth Whited. He is also survived by twelve adoring grandchildren who knew him as Pawpaw and have always believed that he was invincible. They are J. P. Whited III; James Whited; Daniel Whited and wife, Linda; Sarah Whited Drier and husband Tony; Hannah Whited; Lauren Harvey; Kristen Harvey; Kevin Whited and wife, Megan; Jason Whited; David Whited; Nathan Whited; and Jenna Whited. He was preceded in death by one grandchild, Shannon Ross Reese. John earned his degree in Mathematics and Physics from Elon College in 1963. He was employed as an Engineer for Western Electric/AT&T Bell Labs and retired from the company after a 30-year career. After settling in Mebane, he became a lifelong member of Hebron United Methodist Church, serving at various times as Lay Leader, delegate to the Annual Conference, Sunday school teacher, Boy Scout leader, Lay Pastor and member of the Administrative Board. He also served as Lay Pastor for various churches throughout the community and southern Caswell County. He served for many years as a member of the Gideons, placing Bibles in local schools and hotels. He loved the outdoors and was an unapologetic tinkerer. His strong hand, quick wit, unerring guidance, boundless assistance, expert advice, and understanding will be missed by all who knew and loved him. A memorial service will be held Sunday, July 26, 2015 at 4:00 PM at Hebron United Methodist Church. Officiating will be Rev. Brian Sexton. The family will receive friends at the church from 2:00 PM until 4:00 PM Sunday prior to the service.
