Joseph Michael McAndrew passed away peacefully at home on July 15th, surrounded by his family, after a 4-year long battle with pancreatic cancer. He was a New Yorker by birth but a Southerner by the grace of God. He moved to NC as soon as he could in 1983. Joe was the ultimate “car guy.” His love of cars started early and turned into a career. He was a fleet mechanic and worked for almost 20 years for the Town of Chapel Hill Transit system on buses and cars. He had his own shop at home and enjoyed helping repair vehicles for friends and family. Joe loved all things with horsepower: NASCAR and racing, his Harley Davidson motorcycles, and his classic cars. He was a man who loved an adventure and his favorite saying was “I’ll try anything once.” Joe was a Do-It-Yourself kind of a guy and was always working on a project, fostering his catchphrase, “I got it, I got it, I got it…” He dished out advice and jokes almost as often as his creative, culinary concoctions. He mastered cooking anything on a grill, from lasagna to peach cobbler. A devoted family man with a passion for life, he will be immeasurably missed by family and friends. Joe is survived by his spouse, Heather McAndrew, his daughter Danielle Powell, son-in-law Ryan Powell, grandson RJ, and daughter Mallory McAndrew, aunts, uncles and cousins and many lifelong friends. He is preceded in death by his mother and father, Geraldine and Joseph McAndrew. Visitation will be from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm Thursday, July 20th at the McClure Funeral Home in Mebane. Private services will be held for the family at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent in Joe’s name to the FisherHouse.org, an organization helping veterans and their families during times of illness.
