Joy Shotwell Hurst

Joy Shotwell Hurst, 80, of Mebane, died Wednesday December 20, 2023 at home surrounded by her family.  Joy was the daughter of the late Sarah Strickland Shotwell Matthews and William Alfred Shotwell, Sr.  She was born in Roxboro. Joy graduated from Boone Trail High School, Mamers, NC and Sanford Business College.  She retired from Duke University.  Joy was an avid Blue Devil fan.  A devout Christian, Joy had served the Lord in various roles in several churches, including singing solos.  Joy was married to Harold Henry Hurst who preceded her in death.  She loved her family deeply and cherished them. She was also proceeded by her brother William Shotwell Jr. and grandson Kyle Ray Taylor.  She is survived by her children, Carlton Morrison and wife Deana, Tracy Morrison and wife Kelly, Eric Hurst and wife Carmen, Sonna Wilburn, Teresa Hurst; her niece, Suzanne Shotwell, nine grandchildren and many great grandchildren.  The family will receive friends on Saturday December 23, 2023 from 11am-12pm at McClure Funeral Service in Mebane.  A graveside service will follow at 12:30pm Saturday in Oakwood Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Gideons International at https://www.gideons.org/donate or to Duke Children’s Hospital Heart Center at https://www.dukehealth.org/pediatric-treatments/pediatric-cardiology
