Lillian “Diane” Whitmore Cumberland, 59, of Philadelphia, MS, passed away on May 17, 2025, at her home. Born on July 4, 1965, in Burlington, NC, she was the beloved daughter of Iona Whitmore and the late Cleophas “Pete” Whitmore.
Diane attended school in Alamance County but moved to Mississippi where she raised three daughters and was the proud “Grammy” to her beloved grandchildren, Olivia, Chloe, Harper and Axel. She was a former owner of Loaves and Fishes, a seafood restaurant in Philadelphia, MS, serving delicious food to her customers. She had many hobbies, including gardening, mowing grass, visiting the coast, cooking and rescuing dying houseplants. Her favorite hobbies were spending time with her precious grandchildren and visiting her family in NC as often as possible.
She is survived by her mother, Iona Whitmore of Haw River; daughters, Ashley Crapps (John) and Erin Cumberland (Jonathon) of Philadelphia, MS; sister, Rita Jones (Franky) of Haw River; brother, Michael Whitmore of Haw River; sister, Debra Long (Mike) of Burlington; grandchildren, Olivia Crapps, Chloe Tipton, Harper Kate Crapps and Axel Oliphant. As well as a host of nieces and nephews and family and friends. She was preceded in death by her father, Cleophas Whitmore; her brother, Mark Whitmore; and her daughter, Kelly Morrow.
A private graveside service will be held for Diane at Bethsada Baptist Church, 4338 Mebane Oaks Rd, Mebane, NC 27302. At other times, the family will be at the home of her sister, Debra Long, in Burlington.
