Luther Ray Shoffner June 10, 1925 - Nov. 21, 2014 Born June 10, 1925 to Grover Cleveland and Annie Clapp Shoffner in Alamance County, North Carolina, where he remained a lifelong resident, Mr. Shoffner passed away on November 21, 2014. Visitation will be at McClure Funeral Home 1030 S. Main Street, Graham on Sunday, November 23 from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. His funeral service will be held on Monday, November 24 at 2:00 p.m. at Low's Lutheran Church, Liberty, NC with visitation with family following the service. Mr. Shoffner was preceded in death by his dear wife June Hanson Shoffner, whom he met at a Lutheran church in Spokane Washington while he was stationed at Geiger Field, WA. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force, 4th Air Force, with his last posting in Germany as part of the Allied Occupation Forces. He was a member of "the greatest generation." He and June were married in 1946; she entered life eternal on October 29, 2010. He spent many years by her side during a prolonged and difficult illness, caring for her to the very best of his ability, as she had cared for the family all her life. Mr. Shoffner was also predeceased by his brothers and sisters: Grover, Herbert, Lewis, Nina, and Esther. Mr. Shoffner is survived by four children (and their spouses and children): Marion Killoran, married to Rich Killoran, with one son, Will, all of Winston Salem NC. Martin Luther Shoffner, married to Suzanne Shoffner, with three sons, Bryan, Jesse, and Seth, all from the Alamance County area. Bryan is married to Kimberly and has four children: Dylan, Bayley, Mallory, and Colton, and a stepson, Andrew McVay. Jesse is married to Maribel and has one son, Ashton and two stepsons, Kevin and Max Martinez. Seth is married to Ashley and has one daughter, Addison, and a daughter expected in February. Kay Triplett is married to Robert Triplett, of Winston Salem, NC. Dr. Jenice Yoder (born on his birthday,) is married to Wayne Yoder, of Advance, NC, with two sons, Dr. Jacob Yoder of Los Alamos, NM and Matthew Yoder of Bratislava, Slovakia. Dr. Jacob Yoder is married to Dr. Prisca Tiasse Yoder and has one son, Noah. Matthew Yoder is married to Dagmar and has two daughters, Claudia and Claire. Mr. Shoffner is also survived by nieces Glenda Reiber, Ann Stewart and Faye Kennedy and a nephew, A.C. Marley, as well as his sister-in-law, Mary Shoffner. Mr. Shoffner was a life-long member of Low's Lutheran Church, Liberty, NC. He was a very active member all his life, attending regularly until the last few weeks of his life. Many thanks to his dear niece Glenda Reiber, who transported him regularly to church after he could no longer drive. Mr. Shoffner was instrumental in the church's building programs, lending his expertise and labor, and served as chairman on the Church Council and as church treasurer in his younger years. Mr. Shoffner was an accomplished home builder and real estate developer, having many talents which he learned through hard work, experience, and native curiosity. His houses were built the "old fashioned way," with great attention to quality and detail, and with the assurance that he stood behind his work. He was joined in the business for many years by his son Martin, and later by grandsons Bryan, Jesse, and Seth. He built many homes in the Alamance and Guilford County area. Mr. Shoffner was a charter member and past president of the Alamance-Burlington Homebuilders Association. He served on the Housing Authority Board of Graham, NC for 10 years. "A wise man who built his house upon a rock," (Matthew 7:24,) Luther Shoffner made a difference in the world, touching many lives. He was generous and kind, and he taught his children well. He had a heart for minority people, the poor, and the disabled; his generous work was often behind the scenes and quiet. Quite a number of people have said they would have never been able to own a home without his working with them. He loved music and he told funny and touching stories about past experiences, up into his last year of life. He would sing along with hymns, even when his breath was very limited. His prayers were such a treasure to the family. Mr. Shoffner was uncomplaining and very grateful for every kindness shown. He and the family so appreciate the kind staff at the Village at Brookwood, who took care of him with patience and a positive cheerful attitude. The family thanks God for the years he gave us with Luther Shoffner; he leaves behind a precious legacy and example for those of us who follow. Memorial contributions may be made to Low's Lutheran Church, 2136 NC Hwy 61, Liberty, NC 27298 or Allied Churches, PO Box 2581 Burlington, NC 27216-2581.
