Malcolm "Doug" Mitchell

May 20, 1952 — May 5, 2023

Burlington

Malcolm Douglas “Doug” Mitchell, 70, passed peacefully Friday, May 5, 2023, at his residence, Cedar Ridge Retirement Community, Burlington, NC, while wife, Sandra Heath Mitchell, remained faithfully by his side. “Doug” Mitchell is preceded in death by parents, Walter Leonard and Gertrude Nall Mitchell.  Surviving is: wife, Sandra Heath Mitchell, brothers Jerry (Laurie) Mitchell of Graham, NC, Keith Mitchell (Dr. Nicholas Bandarenko, III) of Rougemont, NC; brother-in-law, Gary (Lindy) Heath of Yanceyville, NC, sister-in-law, Lori (Harley) Klein of Julian, NC, along with numerous beloved cousins and friends.

A graduate of Southern Alamance High School, Graham, NC Malcolm continued his education at Liberty Bible Institute, Lynchburg, VA, receiving a Certificate in Bible Studies.  From there, Central Virginia Community College, Lynchburg, VA where he earned his Associates Degree in Police Science, graduating Suma Cum Laude. Malcolm was committed to protecting and serving the community at large, covering a span of over 40 years:  He served as a Security Officer for: Liberty University, Lynchburg, VA; Sharon Harris Nuclear Plant, The Forest at Duke Retirement Community, Durham, NC, The Cedars Retirement Community, Chapel Hill, NC and Alamance Regional Hospital (ARMC), Burlington, NC. Malcolm was very aware of God’s hand upon his life.  Through close calls and falls, surgeries, cancer treatments and clinical trials he thanked God for life and giving wisdom to his medical and oncology care teams.  Malcolm had a passion for God’s word, teaching Sunday School and leading small group Bible Study.  Never being ashamed of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, Malcolm shared his faith testimony to all he came in contact with, praying with and, when allowed, leading others to Christ while giving glory to God, for all things.  Those who were around Malcolm can tell you they were most inspired by his positive outlook on life.  The word ‘brave’ was mentioned by some folks as they spoke of him.  Malcolm would have never taken credit for being or feeling brave.  Malcolm’s future was secure, in that, he knew Philippians 1:21.  The Apostle Paul, while in Rome, spoke to the saints at Philippi, saying, “For me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.”. A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, May 17 @ 11:00 a.m. at McClure Funeral Home, Memorial Chapel, 1030 S Main St, Graham, NC 27253. Following the service, family and friends will be directed to an on-site location where the immediate family will joyfully receive you. Malcolm’s request to guests is to dress in bright, festive colors.  Malcolm was particularly fond of Hawaiian shirts! The family requests memorial gifts be made to AuthoraCare Hospice online at https://www.authoracare.org/give/donate-online or by mail to: AuthoraCare Collective, 2500 Summit Avenue, Greensboro, NC 27405, where you will note for whom, the memorial gift is made and designate (location?)
