Julius S. "Jay" McGhee, of E. Main Street, Swepsonville, North Carolina, passed away peacefully in his home on Saturday, July 4, 2015, at 2:20 p.m., surrounded by his family. Jay was born on October 24, 1940, in Otsego, West Virgina, and is the son of the late Joseph S. McGhee and Hattie Mae Johnson McGhee. He is also preceeded in death by his sisters: Elizabeth (Paul) Gillespie, Anna Mae (Herman) Mounts, Mabel Harvey, Betty Parker, and Lucille (James) Walker. His brothers: Robert McGhee and Franklin McGhee. He is survived by his sister, Gladys (Jim) Blevins of WhiteOak, West Virginia, sister-in-law, Mary McGhee of Hinton, West Virginia, and several neices and nephews. He expressed his gratitiude daily for God's favor in his marriage of 48 years to his best friend and love of his life, Gladys Leach McGhee. Their children are: Christina M. Minshall of Graham, North Carolina, Patricia M. (Tim) Allen of Swepsonville, North Carolina, Franklin D. (Rhene) McGhee of Snow Camp, North Carolina, and Lori A. (Chris) Godfrey of Swepsonville, North Carolina. His step-children are: Carol S. (Alan) Payne of Columbus, Ohio and David W. Smith of Oswego, Oklahoma. His joy in life came from being "Poppy," to his eight beautiful grandchildren: Sarah W. Nix, Lacey M. Boothe, Brittany M. Simpson, Samantha D. McGhee, James A. Payne, Caley E. Minshall, Cassandra Payne, and Robert "Jakob" Godfrey. Also, his two great-grandchildren: Cierra M. Boothe and Emma G. Simpson. He is a Vietnam Veteran who served his country proudly in The United States Army. Once his military service was complete, he was employed by Westinghouse in Columbus, Ohio, for 15 years. He then moved his growing family to Rutland, Ohio, where he was employed by The Southern Ohio Coal Company until his retirement after 17 1/2 years. He was a proud member of the United Mine Workers of America. In his younger years, he was an avid outdoorsman. He passed along his love and knowledge of hunting and fishing to his children. His love of the outdoors continued into his retirement. Though not as physically demanding, he and his wife's camping trips in their RV, cruises, and roadtrips through Mexico were just as adventerous. As a member of The New Beginnings Ministries Church, he was a friend to many and many loved him. He was a man of stronge faith, believing in the strength and power of Jesus Christ's shed blood and the beauty and peace that would await him after his passing. The family will be receiving friends and visitors at McClure Funeral Home on S. Third Street, Mebane, North Carolina, on Wednesday, July 8, 2015, at 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., and again at Rose and Quesnberry Funeral Home, located at 729 Flat Top Rd, Shady Springs, West Virginia, 25918, followed by a memorial service. Burial services will be held at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, Virginia, immediately following the memorial service.
