Michael Joseph LaPorta

April 13, 1941 — May 24, 2026

Michael Joseph LaPorta, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, peacefully passed away on May 24, 2026, at the age of 85. Michael was born on April 13, 1941, in Evergreen Park, Illinois, to the late Michael Anthony LaPorta and Muriel Miller. His journey through life was marked by service, love, and laughter. Michael's early years were spent in the bustling neighborhoods of Chicago's South Side, where he graduated from Mendel Catholic Prep School in 1959. He then pursued higher education at St. Joseph’s College in Rensselaer, Indiana. However, his academic pursuits were interrupted when he was drafted into the US Army during his junior year. Michael served his country with pride from 1963 to 1965 as part of the esteemed 3rd Armored Division, often referred to as “Patton’s Division.” His time in the military, primarily in Germany, left an indelible mark on him, and he achieved the rank of E-4 before completing his service. On May 28, 1976, Michael married the love of his life, Beverlee Ann Masak, in a beautiful ceremony in Chicago. Together, they embarked on a remarkable journey spanning 50 years, filled with love, partnership, and family. They welcomed two sons, Mark and David, into their lives, and later, Michael took great joy in being a grandfather to Margaux and Maurice. Though predeceased by his parents and his son David, Michael’s legacy of love and warmth continues through his surviving family. In 1979, with the unwavering support of his beloved Beverlee, Michael founded Cal Coast Trucking near Downtown Los Angeles. Through hard work and determination, he grew the business into a thriving distribution, transportation, and warehousing company serving the West Coast. Michael’s keen business acumen and his ability to forge meaningful connections with those around him were instrumental in the company’s success. He eventually sold the business in 2011, remaining as a consultant until his full retirement in 2014. Michael was more than just a successful businessman; he was an avid traveler and golfer, exploring the world with a sense of wonder and adventure. His quick wit and sense of humor were legendary, often bringing joy and laughter to any gathering. A true gentleman, Michael was beloved by all who had the privilege to know him. His warm heart and gentle soul touched many lives, leaving an everlasting impression. A service to honor Michael's life will be held on June 2, 2026, at 12:00 PM at McClure Funeral Home, located at 1030 S. Main Street, Graham, NC 27253. The family extends their deepest gratitude to the wonderful staff at the VA Medical Center in Durham for their professional and compassionate care during Michael’s final days. Michael Joseph LaPorta lived a life rich in love, laughter, and service. His legacy will continue to inspire all who knew him, and his memory will be cherished forever.
